Worthy of the limited edition label.

100% Tempranillo from Rioja Alta, Spain. The wine spends 15 months in 80% new French and 20% new American oak and another 10 months in bottle.

Sample submitted for review. SRP of $20. 17,980 cases produced, all bottles are individually numbered. Imported by Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits.

From the bottle:

“Wine for the 2011 vintage was aged in barrels of new French American oak for 15 months. Only the wine of 998 barrels was selected for Tempranillo Limited Edition.

The result is a full-bodied, complex wine with a deep ruby color. Dark, ripe berry fruit aromas are balanced by a touch of fragrant oak. A perfect food wine with elegance and finesse.

While we’re not usually fans of things like “Limited Edition” on the label of a wine, especially on a wine from Rioja which already has well established standards, it only took one taste to wipe away any reservations we might have had about today’s wine.

The 2011 Ramon Bilbao Limited Edition begins with a fabulous aroma full of black cherry, plum, mint, cola and a little spice. The wine tastes very flavorful and is full of rich fruit wrapped up in a nice smooth texture. It’s definitely a bit more complex than your average Crianza, but in a drink me now kind of way. It ends with some nice mineral notes under the rich, tart fruit and spice on the dry, chewy finish.
