Non-vintage Sauvignon Blanc for under $5 from Aldi. We review the California Heritage Sauvignon Blanc.
Primarily Sauvignon Blanc with a bit of Albarino from California.
Made by E. & J. Gallo, just like the extremely cheap Winking Owl wines also found at Aldi, there’s no doubt this non-vintage wine is mass manufactured. That’s not necessarily bad in and of itself and we were encouraged to hear there is a bit of Albarino in the mix, so we decided to check it out.
The California Heritage Sauvignon Blanc sells for just $4.95 exclusively at Aldi.
From the bottle:
fresh – citrus – bright
Fresh and juicy with notes of ripe apple and citrus. On the palate, the fresh fruit is balanced by lively acidity.
Vinted and Bottled by International Wine Merchants
13% Alcohol
(Note: International Wine Merchants is a trademark of E&J Gallo Winery.)
The NV California Heritage Sauvignon Blanc does indeed smell a bit fake/manufactured, but the combination of citrus and some floral and herbal notes ends up working and it’s not a bad start.
Tasting the wine reveals it to be smooth and a bit sweet, but also easy to drink. It features similar flavors to the nose with a touch of tangy tropical fruit. I can’t say it is very Sauvignon Blanc-like but this will please a lot of people at just $5, especially if you like a little residual sugar in your wine.
It ends crisp and mostly dry on the lip-smacking but short finish. It’s certainly not great but hey, for only $4.95 this definitely works!
