Beronia Rioja Gran Reserva - Built To Last

By: Jon Thorsen Published: July 1, 2022 Last Updated: July 29, 2022

A harmonious and age-worthy splurge, the Beronia Rioja Gran Reserva.

Beronia Rioja Gran Reserva - Built To Last

95% Tempranillo, 4% Graciano and 1% Mazuelo from Rioja, Spain. The wine spends 27 months in French oak barrels plus another 36 months in bottle prior to release. It has just 1.9 g/L of residual sugar.

Sample submitted for review. The Beronia Rioja Gran Reserva has an SRP of $30 and is available for as low as $25 (Saturday Splurge). It is imported by Gonzalez Byass.

    From the bottle:

Born among friends, to be shared among friends.

Matured in French oak barrels, and in bottle for a minimum of 5 years.

Vibrant aromas of plums, blueberries and figs. The oak and fruit are perfectly integrated with the flavours of spices and clove. Best served with friends.

    14.5% Alcohol

The 2013 Beronia Gran Reserva begins with a very harmonious aroma of dark fruit, spice and chocolate plus some light balsamic notes.

Tasting the wine reveals great depth, complexity and structure. Featuring similar flavors to the nose, it is also quite harmonious in the mouth. We found that the oak in this wine is much more integrated than the excellent Beronia Reserva.

Like a lot of Gran Reservas, this wine is built to age. In fact, we've selected a number of Gran Reserva as birth year wines for our kids.

Some balsamic notes lead into the dry, very long finish.

I'm not sure I would have gone all the way to a 10 on day 1, but by day 2 (and even after a few hours of air) this wine was really singing, which also bodes well for it's ageability.
