Today's 4-pack begins with one of our favorite varieties, Aglianico. The two bottles of 2015 Mustilli Aglianico in today's offer are 100% Aglianico from the Cesco di Nece vineyard in the tiny Sant'Agata dei Goti DOC in the Sannio hills of Campania, Italy. Aged for 12 months in French oak, only 2,500 bottles were produced.

Aglianico is a full-bodied, tannic red that we adore but never see enough of here in the US. This is a fabulous example that received 94 points from James Suckling and 93 points from Vinous and has at least another 5 years of peak drinking ahead of it.

Piedirosso is an ancient red grape found primarily in Campania, Italy. Producing a lighter wine with soft tannins and good complexity, they are almost Burgundian in style; in fact, we found today's examples to be similar to good cru Beaujolais. Mustilli is a pioneer in this area, planting this indigenous grape when many others were focusing on international varieties.

Both vintages we are offering today are 100% Piedirosso from the Pozzillo vineyard in the municipality of Sant'Agata dei Goti. Aged 12 months in ceramic casks, only 2,000 bottles were produced. These wines have several years of peak drinking ahead of them as well.

Mustilli is one of the historical and most respected wineries in Campania, being the first (in the 1970s) to plant Falanghina and Piedirosso for production as varietals – shunning the international varieties that were the fashion. They are recognized today for the high quality of their native varietal wines.

Mustilli is located in the medieval village of Sant’Agata dei Goti which gives its name to the smallest D.O.C. in Campania, being completely within the larger D.O.C. of Sannio in the upper corner of Campania in the shadow of Mt. Taburno.

Mustilli vineyards are planted on the steep hills of clay, limestone and tufa rock surrounding the village. The winery aims at a perfect correspondence between the wine and the territory, using organic farming techniques and minimum intervention in the cellar. These traditions were started by Leonardo and are today carried on by his two daughters Paola and Anna Chiara, two beautiful ladies making beautiful wine.

The historic cellars of Mustilli are dug into the tufa rock of Sant’Agata Dei Goti under the family palazzo that was built in the 17th Century. The cellars already existed as they were under a destroyed church and served as storage for provisions for the troops during long sieges centuries before. Starting in the 1800’s, the Mustillis used the cellars for wine production and storage. The constant 55° made them ideal, and today these cellars are still used for aging Mustilli Aglianico. Wine production is now carried out in a modern winery just outside the city walls.

Up first, let's take a look at the 2015 Mustilli Cesco di Nece Aglianico which checks in at a very reasonable 13% alcohol.

The 2015 Mustilli Cesco di Nece Aglianico begins with a pleasing aroma of plum, dark cherry and berry fruit that is beautifully mixed with dried herbs and spice. There are lots of other little touches to discover as well as it opens up.

This wine really needs 2-3 hours of air to blossom but blossom it does! It's quite delightful really. Full bodied and balanced, it's smooth and delicious in the mouth featuring similar flavors to the nose. Great on it's own, it's fabulous with food as well.

It ends dry, extremely long, tannic and savory. It was just as good on day 2.

Next we've got the 2016 Mustilli Artus Piedirosso which has just 11.5% alcohol.

The 2016 Mustilli Artus Piedirosso begins with a pleasing aroma of plum and lots of red fruit with some herbal and underbrush notes.

The wine tastes elegant and balanced with more plum plus some brambly fruit. Soft and easy to drink, this light to medium-bodied wine has good persistence. It gets even better as it has more air. We found it to be almost a bit cru Beaujolais like.

It ends dry, long and lasting.

And finally we've got the 2017 Mustilli Artus Piedirosso which also has just 11.5% alcohol.

The 2017 Mustilli Artus Piedirosso smells and tastes very similar to the 2016 although we found the fruit to be a bit juicier with perhaps a bit more depth. It's really pleasing.

With most Piedirosso ending up in Aglianico based blends this is a great way to get a true taste of a single varietal version of this little known grape.
