Castillo Monjardin La Cantera Garnacha – A Solid Value

By: Jon Thorsen Published: August 12, 2019 Last Updated: October 1, 2021

Excellent old vine Spanish Garnacha for under $10, the Castillo Monjardin Garnacha La Cantera from Navarra.

Castillo Monjardin La Cantera Garnacha – A Solid Value

85% Garnacha and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon from the 70 year-old vines of the rocky limestone and clay soils of the La Cantera vineyard in Navarra, Spain. The wine is aged in second use 300L French oak barrels for 6 months and another 6 months in bottle before release.

Sample submitted for review. The Castillo Monjardin La Cantera Garnacha from Bodegas Castillo de Monjardin has an SRP of $12 and is available for as low as $8. 30,000 bottles produced. Imported by Winebow.

    From the bottle:

The Vineyard La Cantera has been growing excellent Garnacha grapes for over 75 years, the roots have gone deep in this Cantera of Spain. Aged in oak for 6 months gives a fine structure. Bright ruby color, it is well balanced with complex fruit.

    13.5% Alcohol

The 2017 Castillo Monjardin Garnacha La Cantera begins with an inviting aroma of blackberry and plum along with nice touches of vanilla and light spice plus some pleasant lavender and violet floral notes. The wine tastes smooth and juicy with ripe dark berry fruit intermingled with cedar, earth and oaky spice notes. Add in a silky texture on this medium-bodied wine and you have a very satisfying, easy to drink Garnacha. It ends dry with good length. Once again, old vine Spanish Garnacha brings tremendous value!
