A hyped up wine at a great Costco price, but does it deliver? We review the Cerro Anon Rioja Crianza from Bodegas Olarra.
85% Tempranillo, 10% Mazuelo and 5% Graciano from Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Alto in Spain. The wine was aged 14-15 months in a mixture of new and used 225-liter oak casks.
The Cerro Anon Rioja Crianza has an SRP of $16 and an average selling price of $14 but we found it at Costco for $7.99. It is imported by Tr-Vin Imports. Ready to buy? Check your local retailers.
It’s always an interesting experience when wineries or importers plaster wine scores all over the label. (This one has it 3 times between the front and back labels.) Sometimes they live up to the hype, but we often find these wines just don’t live up to the expectations. Today we’re checking one out from Costco, which at just $7.99 has a pretty low bar. Let’s see how it tastes.
This red has depth and energy, in the traditional style. Cherry, leafy and orange peel flavors mingle with loamy earth notes, supported by firm tannins and citrusy acidity. Complex and harmonious.

The nose of the 2017 Cerro Anon Rioja Crianza from Bodegas Olarra is a bit shy at first but features aromas of black cherry, plum and a touch of spice once it opens up.
The wine tastes smooth and enjoyable but we found it to be rather simple and one dimensional. It features similar flavors to the nose but they are a bit juicy in the mouth.
It ends dry and a bit chalky on the medium-long finish. It’s a bit of a letdown for Rioja but this is still a good wine if you can get it at the Costco price. It tasted about the same on day 2.
