Dama de Roca Garnacha - A Solid Payout

By: Jon Thorsen Published: June 24, 2019 Last Updated: October 1, 2021

Another winning Trader Joe's pick, the Dama de Roca Garnacha from Bodegas Paniza.

Dama de Roca Garnacha - A Solid Payout

Garnacha from Carinena, Spain. The wine spends an unspecified amount of time in oak.

The Dama de Roca Garnacha is available exclusively at Trader Joe's and sells for just $5.99. Imported by Evaki Inc.

    From the bottle:

Dama de Roca is a tribute to the old tradition that still continues in the picturesque village of Paniza and one of our star varietals, the garnacha. Of great wealth and complexity, intense aromas of red and black fruits with a toasted touch; Vanilla, caramel and chocolate notes.

    14.5% Alcohol

Today's wine is from Bodegas Paniza, a cooperative winery operating in the Carinena region of Spain. We had the chance to visit there a few years back and we're blown away by the quality of the wines being produced. It's an amazing little value spot for old vine Garnacha grown in rock and slate filled soils. Add in the Trader Joe's prices and availability and you've got a winning hand.

The 2016 Dama de Roca Garnacha begins with a pleasing aroma of blackberry, red and black cherry, baking spice, licorice plus a little vanilla, smoke and balsamic. For a $6 wine, it has quite an array of intriguing and enticing aromas that continue to develop more and more as it has some time to breathe.

Taking a sip reveals a smooth and a bit rustic wine that is quite tasty. Touches of baking spice and licorice carry over from the nose along with some added chocolate and mineral earthy notes on this medium-bodied wine. It ends dry and medium-long. This is another great example of the value to be found in Spanish Garnacha!

    2016 Dama de Roca Garnacha
