Harney Lane Lizzy James Zinfandel - Splurge-tastic

By: Jon Thorsen Published: May 11, 2019 Last Updated: August 15, 2022

Big taste from a vineyard planted in 1904, the Harney Lane Lizzy James Old Vine Zinfandel.

Harney Lane Lizzy James Zinfandel - Splurge-tastic

100% Zinfandel from the 100+ year-old Lizzy James Estate Vineyard in Lodi, California. The wine is aged for 20 months in French oak and has 2 g/L of residual sugar.

Sample submitted for review. The Harney Lane Lizzy James Zinfandel has an SRP of $36 (Saturday Splurge) and is available at that price. Only 723 cases produced.

    From the winery:

Sourced exclusively from Lizzy James Old Vine Zinfandel Vineyard that was planted in 1904. Vineyard is located approximately 2 miles north of the Tasting Room and has extremely sandy soils. This 2015 vintage was an amazing year for the Lizzy James Zinfandel Vineyard. A rich compilation of concentrated blackberry compote, dried fruit, floral perfume, black spices, cinnamon, maple and bread pudding. Voluptuous, bold richness gives this full-bodied wine a big, delicious taste that won't disappoint.

With its big bold spicy flavors, the 2015 Lizzy James Zinfandel will go well with homemade chili, slow cooked beef brisket and pan roasted duck breast.

    15.7% Alcohol

A special one for the Zin lovers today, truly old "Old Vine" Zinfandel. The 2015 Harney Lane Lizzy James Zinfandel begins with a wonderful aroma of blackberry, black cherry, baking spice, vanilla and more.

The wine tastes smooth and succulent with more and more layers of complexity as it breathes in the glass. The fruit turns more towards raisins and prunes and is joined with more baking spice and vanilla along with black pepper and dried herbs.

It finishes dry and long with lasting dark fruit, vanilla and spice. Be forewarned, this is a big, high-alcohol zin, but if you enjoy this style like we do, then this is a great splurge.

Part of the reason for the higher cost of today's wine is the age of the vineyard -- there just aren't that many vineyards this old. If you're interested in finding out more about how this impacts the resulting wine, check out our Ask The Expert question "Do Old Vines Make Better Wine."
