Summer Ship – Includes heat protection (styrofoam), freeze packs (when necessary), an upgrade to UPS 2-day shipping to minimize transit time when your order ships, and packages will only ship at the beginning of the week (normally each Monday) to avoid them sitting somewhere hot over a weekend.

These orders have an additional cost of $8 built into the product price for this Heat Protection Package. It is NOT possible (nor would it be advisable!) to purchase a deal with summer shipping without also including the Heat Protection Package.

Summer Hold – Buy your wine now and have your shipment held (at no extra charge) for delivery in October! While we take every precaution we can with our Summer Shipping protocol, we also know that many of you travel or live in very hot areas where you don’t want to risk it (or you simply detest styrofoam).

Please note this is not a “ship-at-will” program, all your summer hold orders will ship (in cardboard/no styrofoam) at a date of our choosing in mid-October once temperatures have cooled down. And now, on to our full reviews of each wine!

Up first we’ve got a wine from one of our favorite producers. The 2022 Vinum Cellars CHENIN has been made from the Wilson Vineyard in Clarksburg, California for 25 vintages!

The wine is fermented in stainless steel and only 1,500 cases of this beauty were made. You will receive 1 bottle.

From the winery:

It’s hard to believe, but we built our company in 1997 on credit cards and some help from family. Like many young, ambitious entrepreneurs we set out to challenge the status quo and earned a reputation as young Turks in an industry of Titans. This label was created as a light hearted poke at an emerging Chardonnay market which turned its back on Chenin Blanc. It is still our belief that Chenin Blanc (when made well) rivals some of the greatest white wines of the world. This wine was made from cool climate grapes, stainless steel fermented and aged for 9 months Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah… REDISCOVER CHENIN BLANC!

This unique crisp white wine is made from the noble Chenin Blanc grape most prominent in the Loire Valley of France. We found an exceptional vineyard farmed by Ken Wilson in Clarksburg California (a third generation farmer) who agreed to sell us the grapes on handshake. Today this same vineyard is being farmed by Ken’s nephew David Ogilvie and so the tradition carries on to the 4th generation. Wilson Farms was established in 1922 by George Wilson.

This is our 25th vintage of Chenin Blanc from this vineyard. Part of what makes Clarksburg a special appellation is the cooling trend that comes in from the San Francisco Bay every day at about 3:30 pm and sweeps the heat out of the valley floor which allows the grapes to maintain their natural acidity. I like to say this is a reverse cooling trend in that moderation (of heat) comes in the afternoon rather than the early mornings as it does on the coast.

Tasting Notes: This pale stone colored Chenin displays a silvery hue in the sunlight as you swirl it in the glass. The aromas are classic Chenin, with Verbena and citrus, clover honey and Casaba melon. The crisp palate is juicy with ample acidity and displays honeysuckle and citron lemon flavors underscoring the integrated acidity of a generous fruit-driven mid palate. The finish is layered with mineral, wet stone, lemon zest and Key Lime, pear grit and sweet passionfruit essence while finishing bone dry.

Food Pairings: This wine is best finely chilled or over Chenin ice cubes (made with the same wine poolside or on its own or with an accompaniment. It’s ideal with oysters on the half shell or any shellfish from fresh blue crab from the Chesapeake Bay or Dungeness crab from San Francisco, or day boat scallops from Maine. Ideal with roasted and chilled beet salads with goat cheese and toasted Hazelnuts or baked goat cheese tarts with sun-dried tomato and a mesclun salad with champagne vinaigrette.

And now on to our review:

The 2022 Vinum Cellars CHENIN opens with plenty of apple, melon and citrus on the nose, plus some tropical fruit, peach and a bit of a honeysuckle note. It’s a fresh, snappy and very inviting start!

Taking a sip reveals a tasty and refreshing wine with tangy, juicy fruit similar to the nose and even a bit of minerality underneath. Smooth and with good, bright acidity, this is a great alternative to an unoaked Chardonnay. It also comes from the same vineyard as the Chenin Blanc in the popular Vinum Cellars White Elephant blend we previously offered as an Insider Deal.

A touch of honey lingers on the lips on the dry, very long, lip-smacking finish. This is not only seriously good, but it’s also quite food friendly too!

Next we’ve got the Bulk Buy rated 2022 Desert Wind Albarino. Instantly refreshing but also full of depth this beautiful example of the variety comes from a rather unexpected place – the Royal Slope AVA of Washington State.

We rate it at 91-93 points and Wine Enthusiast, International Wine Report and Great Northwest Wine all agree. Only 450 cases were produced. You will receive 1 bottle.

TASTING NOTES: “Lemon zest, grapefruit, and fresh cut grass. Swirling brings honeydew melon, nectarine, and dried mango. Mouthfeel is light bodied, with remarkable sweetness and vibrant acidity. Flavors of stone fruit and citrus dominate the mid-palate, with a very fresh herbaceous aftertaste. The wine finishes very long and angular, with the perfect amount of sweetness to back it up. A delicious Albariño, perfect for a warm day, that you can drink now or in the next 3 years to preserve freshness.”

WINEMAKING NOTES: The 2022 growing season started with very cool weather, with a late snow and a cool spring, putting us two to three weeks behind an average growing season. With a pleasantly warm summer without the huge heat spikes that we saw in the previous few years, the vines were able to ripen long into the growing season, producing wines with beautiful lift and great acidity. Overall, it was a gorgeous vintage for the second year with our new winemaking team. The 2022 Albariño, a first for Desert Wind, was picked in mid September from our sister estate Stoneridge Vineyard in the Royal Slope AVA. The grapes were lightly pressed, then fermented and aged for six months in stainless steel before bottling.

VINEYARD NOTES: The Royal Slope AVA is a recently appointed (2020) wine growing region in central Washington, just north of the Wahluke Slope AVA and our Desert Wind Estate Vineyard. The Royal Slope is known for its south-facing slope, elevation changes, and cooler conditions, especially when compared to the Wahluke Slope. This Albariño was sourced from the famed Stoneridge Vineyard, which is managed by Desert Wind co-owners Lawrence Vineyards, and is distinguished by producing the first 100 point Washington wine. Sustainably farmed since 2018, Stoneridge Vineyard has gravelly and cobbly sandy loam, with large rocks dispersed throughout the topsoil and excellent drainage.

And now on to our review:

The 2022 Desert Wind Albarino opens with an aromatic and inviting nose full of lovely grapefruit and lemon zest plus touches of wintergreen, spearmint, honeysuckle and green apple.

The wine is simply lovely to taste as well with lots of rich, delicious fruit similar to the nose, a smooth, full mouthfeel and good acidity. We love that it’s super easy to drink and highly refreshing but that it also features wonderful depth.

It ends with a dry, long, lip-smacking finish just as you would expect for the variety.

We know how much all of you loved our popular Desert Wind Sandstorm Series red wine offers and this white is just as good. Don’t miss it.

Next, we’ve got the Bulk Buy rated 2022 DAOU Discovery Collection Paso Robles Rosé, a Provence style 100% Grenache rosé that not only comes in a pretty bottle, but also tastes incredible.

This is backed up by multiple 90+ point scores including 91-points from Wine Enthusiast and 91-93 points from us. It’s also backed up by the highly acclaimed producer DAOU Vineyards. You will receive 1 bottle.

Made from gently pressed Grenache grapes in the classic Old World style, the 2022 Rosé presents a pretty pale flamingo hue with scintillating aromas of fresh strawberry, guava, crème brûlée and honeysuckle. Subtle hyacinth and ginger notes are accompanied by cranberry, rhubarb, cherry blossom and lemon meringue. The palate is exquisitely balanced, displaying a lush, crisp juiciness with flavors of ripe strawberry, papaya, nectarine and mandarin orange. Hints of spiced peach, mango and watermelon are complemented by red delicious apple, kiwi, apricot and honeydew melon, all cascading into a clean, refreshing finish.

THE VINTAGE: DAOU wines represent our passion for approachable luxury. Winemaker Daniel Daou has cultivated deep connections with select Paso Robles growers for numerous vintages, allowing him to maintain absolute quality and consistency. The 2022 growing season was initially marked by winter drought conditions that were alleviated by rains in late March and April—a miracle happenstance that replenished the soils and set the pace for healthy vine canopies to come. A later-than-usual bud break was followed by normal spring and summer weather patterns through August. Finally, a September heat wave prompted an early harvest that put Daniel’s ingenuity, artistry and experience to the test. In the end, 2022 was a winemaker’s vintage, yielding elegantly flavorful and balanced wines that prove the importance of mastering grape growing and winemaking.

And now on to our review:

The 2022 DAOU Discovery Collection Paso Robles Rosé begins with a very pleasant and attractive aroma of peach, melon, watermelon, lemon zest, strawberry, a hint of bubblegum and touches of sea salt and tropical fruit.

Taking a sip reveals a smooth, lovely, round, tasty and balanced light to medium-bodied rosé featuring similar flavors to the nose that are a bit tarter and tangier in the mouth. There are also touches of tropical fruit and the mineral notes from the nose are a bit broader than just sea salt when tasting. Very refreshing and with great complexity, depth and structure, this is a fantastic example of rosé.

It ends dry, long, fresh and satisfying. This definitely lives up to the hype!

And finally, we’ve got the 2018 Casino Mine Ranch Grenache Blanc, whole-cluster pressed and aged for 14 months in neutral French oak.

Grenache Blanc is best known in Southern France and Spain, but this is an excellent, lip-smacking example of the variety from the Shenandoah Valley of the Sierra Foothills in California. You will receive 1 bottle.

Who We Are: Casino Mine Ranch is an estate vineyard located in the Sierra Foothills of Amador County. The winery – a century old ranch that was once mined for gold — is owned and managed by fourth-generation California brothers, Jim and Rich Merryman.

Our Grenache Blanc is whole-cluster pressed, fermented in neutral French oak with extended bâtonnage, and aged for fourteen months. The pale lemon hue is flecked with gold. As this gorgeous wine sits in the glass, it reveals aromas of Acacia, wet gravel, and stone fruits. Rich yet focused, it displays balanced acidity and layers of yellow apples, citrus, and anise on the palate.

Food Pairing: Pair with everything from gazpacho to hand made butternut squash pasta in brown butter to Pear Tarte Tatin! We always grab a bottle of our Grenache Blanc when we order the Kung Pao “Firecracker” chicken or tofu from China Live in San Francisco.

The 2018 Casino Mine Ranch Grenache Blanc opens with an attractive, intriguing aroma of citrus, tropical fruit, apricot, a bit of a honeysuckle floral note and a touch of spice. With lots of different layers to discover as you sniff, it’s a very nice start.

Taking a sip reveals a refreshing wine with similar flavors to the nose and rich fruit in the mouth. With very good balance and depth and a wonderful, vibrant acidity, this one has it all.

It ends dry and a bit tangy on the crisp, long, lip-smacking finish. Still fresh and lively, this wine has plenty of life left in it and even some more aging potential.
