We love a good Cab and Red Hills in Lake County is a fantastic spot to find them thanks to its rocky, volcanic soils and higher elevations. This little tidbit from the Lake County Winegrape Commission might help explain why:
Higher elevations and Lake County’s pure air allow for greater levels of UV light…This UV triggers thicker grape skins, greater tannins, and intense wines with high phenolic content.
Of course, the proof is in the bottle and this wine from older, dry-farmed vines backs it up with a 94-point score from the Tasting Panel and 91-93 points from us. And in a rather unique and delicious twist the wine also has 20% Zinfandel to go along with the other 80% Cabernet Sauvignon.
The whole thing is then aged 20 months in 25% new French oak barrels, and the results speak for themselves.

Winemaker Chad Alexander first entered the wine business in 1985 working at Mt. Veeder’s Hess Collection Winery. After 8 years of working with mountain fruit, he decided to expand his skills and worked in various winery cellars throughout Napa Valley. He studied Geology in college to expand his knowledge of soil science and how it correlates with planting vineyards.

The craziness of 2020 was no problem for these old vines, but the wines show that extra element of exoticism and vibrant fruit. Look for a bouquet of hyper-ripe black cherries, white pepper, wintergreen, cinnamon and sweet vanilla. The palate is intense and expressive, with the kind of finish that just tells you that this will age for a long time yet is very drinkable now.

The 2020 Sawtooth Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon opens with lots of cedar and barrel-room like aromas on the nose plus ripe berry and lots of assorted spice notes (mint, cinnamon, vanilla and more).
Like we mentioned above, the addition of Zinfandel makes for a rather unique blend but it certainly works as this is a very well put together wine. It has great structure and mouthfeel with some lovely chalky tannins. Black cherry plus other red and dark berries flavors are juicy in the mouth but balanced out with some spice and those chalky tannins.
It ends dry, chewy and long with lingering juicy fruit and spice. Quite tasty, this is a great Cab. Day 2 was just as good if not even a bit better.
