Because we’re only shipping at the beginning of the week, these orders may take a bit more time to ship after the conclusion of the offer (likely 5-12 days rather than our normal 5-10). The 4th of July holiday may also add an extra day.

These orders have an additional cost of $8 built into the product price for this Heat Protection Package. It is NOT possible (nor would it be advisable!) to purchase a deal with summer shipping without also including the Heat Protection Package.

Summer Hold (No Extra Charge) – Buy your wine now and have your shipment held (at no extra charge) for delivery in October! While we take every precaution we can with our Summer Shipping protocol, we also know that many of you travel or live in very hot areas where you don’t want to risk it (or you simply detest styrofoam).

Ricasoli is the most representative wine producer in the Chianti Classico wine area. With its gentle hills, velvety valleys, and thick woodlands of oaks and chestnuts, the 1,200 hectares of property include almost 240 hectares of vineyards and 26 of olive groves. This creates a continuous succession of colors and hues around the Brolio Castle, which is located within the town limits of Gaiole in Chianti.

The history of the Ricasoli family has been linked to wine since 1141, when there is written testimony attesting that the Ricasoli family already possessed Brolio Castle. After centuries defending their lands and feudal sovereignty, the Ricasoli family understood the great potential of the Brolio territory and were among the first to dedicate themselves to the improvement of agriculture and vineyards. In fact, the family tree, reproduced in a print from 1584, is one of the first images of the Chianti area.

Interesting documents from the late 1600s report the first exports to Amsterdam and England, whereas at the start of the 1900s, the wines from Brolio were well known and appreciated, requested and exported all over the world: from China to Saudi Arabia, from South Africa to Guatemala, from Costa Rica to the one-time British colonies in Africa. Most especially, in 1872 Baron Bettino Ricasoli (1809 – 1880), illustrious politician and visionary wine entrepreneur, originated the formula for Chianti wine, now called Chianti Classico.

Tasting Notes: Intense ruby red color and a rich, complex nose featuring ripe red fruit, spices, and vanilla notes. On the palate, it offers a voluminous mouthfeel with structured tannins and a long, persistent finish.

Vineyard: Vineyard soils vary greatly but all are strewn with stony fragments adding mineral richness.

Density: 5.500/6.600 plants/ha

Training: spurred cordon and guyot

Vintage: Overall, we can state that 2018 was a complex harvest due to the climate trends, which tended to be more humid than average in the past, but with excellent summer temperatures and a very dry period in the months of September and October.

Winemaking: Fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 24°C-27°C (75.2°-80.6°F) with 14-16 days of skin contact.

And now on to our review:

The 2018 Barone Ricasoli Brolio Chianti Classico Riserva begins with an excellent aroma of black cherry, plum, cedar and balsamic plus a little baking spice, leather, orange peel and licorice too. There are lots of little touches to explore here, it’s a fantastic start.

The wine tastes fresh, juicy and delicious with all those same flavors as the nose with a bit more spice in the mouth. This is an extremely well put together Chianti Classico Riserva that is just a delight to drink and will pair wonderfully with all kinds of foods.

It ends dry, very long and a bit grippy on the savory finish and it gets even better as it breathes. In fact, it was probably at its best on day 2 so plan appropriately if you drink it in the near term. I love it, this is first class Sangiovese!
