Kirkland Signature Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon Review

Move over Josh, there’s a new budget Cab in town. We review the new Kirkland Signature Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon from Costco.

Kirkland Signature Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon Review

Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma County of California. The wine spends an unspecified amount of time in French oak.

It’s always a good day when Costco adds a new Kirkland Signature wine to their line and this time they’ve turned to a classic – Sonoma Cab.

A look at the back label reveals that this wine is made by Grape & Grain, which is part of Precept Wine, a large producer who have a number of their own brands and also work with Costco on some of the other Kirkland Signature wines. They tend to focus on wines from the northwest, so it’s a bit interesting that they are doing a Sonoma Cabernet, but let’s check it out!

Kirkland Signature Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon is filled with dark fruit aromas of ripe cherry and plum integrated with hints of vanilla and espresso. Notes of red currants and blackberries are complemented by a touch of acidity. The finish is rounded out by soft, silky tannins, created by elegant French oak maturation.

The 2023 Kirkland Signature Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a pleasing aroma full of ripe dark fruit plus touches of vanilla and spice. It’s a nice start.

Tasting the wine reveals it to be soft and very smooth with more juicy dark fruit plus some well-integrated spice. It also seems to have a touch of residual sugar, which gives this very easy to drink wine a lot of mass appeal.

It ends dry, soft and a bit grippy on the long finish that also features some lasting oaky spice notes plus licorice, chocolate and more vanilla. There is nothing not to like here, especially at this low price. It was just as good on day 2.

This is squarely in the Josh Cab drinker’s wheelhouse, but it offers much more value at this low price! This also makes a fantastic addition to our Wedding Wine list.
