We love Grenache-Syrah-Mourvedre (GSM) blends as they contain some of our absolute favorite varietals. Originating in the Rhone Valley of France, they can now be found everywhere, however you don’t see a lot of them from Napa Valley where Cab is King.
As we like to remind people, those beautiful Napa soils are good for growing a wide range of grapes, not just Cabernet. We like to give props to the vineyards willing to grow these other varieties when they could probably make more ripping them out and switching to Cabernet.
And not only is the region intriguing on this one, but also the blend with 70% smooth and ripe Grenache (the primary variety behind the wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape) and 26% of the thick skinned, tannic Mourvedre grape (which we love) along with 4% Syrah. Juicy, structured and savory with a very long finish, this is delicious!
Decanter agrees rating it very similarly to our 9 Taste Rating at 92 points.

70% Grenache, 4% Syrah, 26% MourvèdreWINERY INFORMATION: The team at Imperium has a singular focus on selective winemaking. We identify the uniquely driven style in each barrel and capture it’s true essence in a series of small production wines.
WINEMAKING: Crafted with hand-selected Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre from prime vineyard sites across Napa Valley. Each lot was harvested at peak ripeness and gently destemmed before small-lot fermentation to preserve the character of each varietal. Careful cap management during fermentation ensured vibrant color and balanced tannins, while aging in oak barrels for over a year added layers of spice and subtle toast.
PALATE & AROMA: Packed with red fruits – cherry liqueur, sweet pomegranate reduction, red currants and a lovely, sweet baking spice, this blend reveals a smokey, spicy palate up front and slides into dried black raspberry, plum, and clove. Softly textured yet robust.
92 POINTS, DECANTER: A refreshing, juicy, easy-drinking, delectable GSM blend from Napa Valley. Lively aromatics of cinnamon-dusted red cherry and strawberry fruits mingle with mocha spices, clove, and flamed orange peel. Medium-bodied with silky tannins braced by brisk acids.

The 2021 Imperium Fortuna Napa Valley GSM opens with a strong, harmonious aroma of black cherry, baking spice, strawberry and lots of other little touches (licorice, dried herbs and more). It’s a great start!
Taking a sip reveals a juicy, structured blend with well-integrated spice and a smooth, lively mouthfeel. It features similar flavors to nose with more licorice, a bit of a pleasing smoked meat note and lots of other little touches with time in the glass.
It ends dry, crisp, a bit chewy and quite long and was even a bit better and more savory on day 2.
