It was only in 1964 that the Ratcliffe Family arrived on the scene, and it took winemaker Norma Ratcliffe, alongside her husband Stan, twenty years before they released their first wine. Warwick’s La Femme Bleu Cabernet Sauvignon was released in 1984, after which the estate went on to bottle the first ever ‘Cape Blend’ in the world, won multiple international wine awards, appeared on some of the planet’s most prestigious wine lists, and even became a wine of choice for James Bond in one of his many adventures.

In many senses, the Warwick Estate brand that you know today was developed the same way one might nurture a grape vine; through decade upon decade of careful planning, pruning, and persistence. Long before the fruit farm, and long before the Ratcliffe family, this little piece of the planet held greatness in its very soil. Up first, let’s take a look at the Cabernet Sauvignon. You will receive two bottles in today’s 4-pack.

From the winery:

VARIETAL: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
WINE OF ORIGIN: Western Cape

TASTING NOTE: True Cabernet Sauvignon nose, dark chocolate, black berries, and cassis. The palate pure and fresh with classic notes of dark berries, rosemary, cigar box and dark chocolate. Tannins are finely structured and supported by a rich and creamy texture. Ready to enjoy but will reward cellaring over the next three to five years.

WINEMAKING: Grapes are picked at optimal ripeness and transported to the cellar and de-stemmed into tank. The wines spent between 7 and 12 days on the skins depending on the tannin structure, with three to four pump overs per day and then pressed to undergo malolactic fermentation in tank.

FOOD PAIRING: Roast leg of lamb or grilled rib eye steak with new potatoes.

And now on to our review:

The 2021 Warwick The First Lady Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a pleasing aroma of ripe black cherry and other dark fruit plus cedar, spice, chocolate and a touch of wintergreen and vanilla.

The medium to full-bodied wine tastes smooth with similar flavors to the nose plus lots oak influence in the form of chocolate and vanilla. This is a very solid, crowd pleasing kind of Cabernet that is easy to drink and gets even better with air.

It ends dry and long and was similar on day 2 where it also developed a bit of green, herbal note.

VARIETAL: 100% Pinotage
WINE OF ORIGIN: Western Cape

TASTING NOTE: Vibrant nose of rose petal, fresh currents, strawberries, cherry, and spice. The palate is bright with finely textured tannins, red cherry, strawberry, and ripe plums. finish. The finish, nice and dry with a hint of cedarwood and spice. Enjoy now or age for the next three to five years.

WINEMAKING: Grapes are picked at optimal ripeness and transported to the cellar and de-stemmed into tank. The wine spent between 4 and 7 days on the skins depending on the tannin structure, with three to four pump overs per day and then pressed to undergo malolactic fermentation in tank.

After completion the wine was aged for 12 months with various types of oak, 8% new oak was used, before blending and a light filtration and bottling in May 2023.

And now on to our review:

The 2022 Warwick The First Lady Pinotage opens with quite an attractive aroma of dark berry fruit with a little spice.

Taking a sip reveals this to be smooth, layered and quite good. This is an easy-drinking example of Pinotage that also has good depth and acidity. Medium-bodied, it features similar flavors to the nose with lots of sweet tasting fruit, even though this a dry wine at just 3.3 g/L of residual sugar.

It ends dry and quite long on the finish and was even a bit better on day 2. This is a crowd-pleasing Pinotage that should pair nicely with anything off the grill. Very nice.
