Maison Barboulot Cabernet-Syrah – Full-Blown Delicious

Last Updated on June 21, 2024

A simply satisfying and super ripe table wine that will have you dreaming of your next European vacation, we review the latest vintage of the Trader Joe’s Maison Barboulot Cabernet-Syrah.

Maison Barboulot Cabernet-Syrah – Full-Blown Delicious

50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Syrah from the Languedoc in the South of France. The wine is fermented in concrete tanks and aged a few months with French oak staves. It has 8-9 g/L of residual sugar.

The Maison Barboulot Cabernet-Syrah is available exclusively at Trader Joe’s (in the US) and sells for just $5.99. It is imported by Plume Ridge.

From the bottle:

Nestled at the foothills of the Black Mountains, these vineyards soak up the Mediterranean sun while enjoying cool nights. We have carefully selected the ripest grapes to deliver generous aromas of ripe cherry along with hints of vanilla on the palate and a lingering finish.

Crafted in the purest French tradition, this blend is a unique modern style. Enjoy on its own or pair with grilled sirloin, meatloaf and casseroles.

13.5% Alcohol

Whenever we first find a wine that we love at Trader Joe’s, we always approach future vintages with a bit of trepidation. Will it continue to live up to the standard or, as we often find, was it just a one or two vintage wonder? And while we’ve recommended this one for several vintages now, we still felt that familiar bit of anxiousness as we checked out the latest offering. Luckily, this one still delivers although we did like this vintage (the 2022) just a tad bit less than the previous.

The 2022 Maison Barboulot Cabernet-Syrah begins with pleasing aromas of ripe, fleshy red fruit, a little vanilla and even some hints of baseball card bubblegum.

The wine tastes very smooth, super ripe, fruity and a bit sweet. This is just a really good example of a simple and satisfying table wine. Did I mention it was ripe and fruity?

And while it is a very fruit forward wine, some nice touches of spice lead into the dry, slightly grippy finish of lingering tart fruit. It was just as good on day 2.

This is the type of seemingly nondescript, inexpensive, everyday table wine you find when traveling in Europe that sticks in your memory because it was just so darn satisfying.

Here’s what Trader Joe’s says about it:

Hailing from the Pay’s d’Oc region of Southern France, Maison Barboulot Cabernet-Syrah may just be one of the finest hidden gems in our entire wine section. Each sip is smooth and fruity, with ripe aromas of cherry and refined notes of vanilla on the palate, leading into a lovely, lingering finish. It’s the kind of wine you can turn to, again and again, to pair with a nice, seared steak during a romantic dinner, to cheers with a loved one as you nestle into the couch to watch a show, or even to just keep on hand for whenever the moment calls for an outstanding and approachable French red.
