There is something notable about the Onesta Cinsault indeed – it’s those extremely old vines!
Despite this variety being grown for several centuries in southern France the 25-acre Bechthold Vineyard planted in 1886 in little ole Lodi, California is actually the oldest Cinsault vineyard in the world.
The Cinsault or Cinsaut (pronounced sin-SO in the U.S. and san-SO in France) planted here is true gnarly old vine stuff, in fact I snapped this pic when I visited a few years ago. (And yes, I’m that big of a wine geek that I actually visit famous, old vineyards.)
This organically and dry farmed vineyard (after 133 years those roots go deeeeep) is lovingly tended by Kevin Phillips, son of Michael Phillips of Michael David Winery, for the handful of producers lucky enough to make some very special wines from its grapes.

The 2019 Onesta Cinsault is 100% Cinsault, all from the Bechthold Vineyard. The wine was aged 18 months in neutral French oak barrels and has almost no residual sugar (just 0.2 g/L). Around 300 cases were produced.
From the winery:
The stylistic expression of the Bechthold vineyard Cinsault is greatly affected by Mother Nature. Some years, Mother Nature delivers cooler temperatures, and the wine is more “Pinot-like”. In warmer vintages, the wine style leans more towards a bold Zinfandel. The 2019 vintage is more Pinot-like, packed with many red and blue fruit flavors and an elegant tannin profile. Think juicy red plum, dark cherry, and crisp blueberry with hints of vanilla. The wine is very food-friendly and an excellent choice to serve at the Thanksgiving feast.
Vineyard Notes: The Bechthold vineyard in the Lodi region was planted in 1886. It is the oldest Cinsault vineyard in the world! The old vines are head trained, organically grown and dry farmed. Jillian was introduced to this vineyard in 2001 and has been working with the fruit ever since. Onesta is lucky to have a 4.2-acre block on the east side of the vineyard where the vines produce the most concentrated fruit in the whole vineyard.
Vinification: The perfect recipe involves gentle handling, saignée, cold soak, raging fermentation, extended maceration, and 18 months aging in neutral French oak barrels.
Food Pairings: Roasted chicken, teriyaki salmon, margarita pizza, smoked baby back ribs, and holiday dinners.

And now on to our review:
The 2019 Onesta Bechthold Vineyard Cinsault begins with a very pleasant and very complex aroma of strawberry, black cherry, red licorice, spice, mint and a hint of rhubarb. Harmonious right from the start, the aroma continues to blossom over the course of a couple hours so don’t be afraid to give it some time to breathe.
Tasting reveals a smooth, medium-bodied wine, a bit like Pinot Noir (which you wouldn’t really expect from the dark color). In the mouth it features similar fruit flavors to the nose with a bit of cranberry as well. The wine is also quite juicy when tasting and has very well integrated spice.
All of that sounds good enough but this wine also has an incredible depth of flavor, complexity, structure and even a bit of lively minerality that can only come from these very old vines. Frankly words don’t do it justice.
It ends very long and dry with an absolutely delicious finish full of lingering flavors and spice, tempting you to take another sip. After about 4 hours it’s really singing. My goodness, I love this wine.
Stock up on this one, especially at this price. (This is the definition of a “Bulk Buy”!) There have been several times where we were not able to offer it due to lack of supply so who knows when it will be back again.
