Ochoa Crianza Tempranillo – Quite Nice

By: Jon Thorsen Last Updated: August 19, 2019

Another nice find from Navarra, the Bodegas Ochoa Tempranillo Crianza.

Ochoa Crianza Tempranillo - Quite Nice

Single estate Tempranillo from 25 year-old vines at 1,350 feet of elevation in the Santa Cruz vineyard in Navarra, Spain. The wine spends 12 months in 225L American oak casks plus 1 year in the bottle before release. It has just 1.8 g/L of residual sugar.

Sample submitted for review. The Ochoa Crianza Tempranillo has an SRP of $23 and is available for as low as $16. Imported by Frontier Wine Imports.

From the bottle:

Bodegas Ochoa is family owned and operated, today by the 6th generation. Javier Ochoa and his daughter, Adriana, are the winemakers, combining traditional elegance with innovative and modern techniques. Our wine is made from Tempranillo grapes grown in our single estate “Santa Cruz” Vineyard. The aging for one year in American oak barrels makes the wine round by balancing the ripe fruit flavors with the elegance from the oak and softens the tannins through the long finish.

13.5% Alcohol

The 2014 Bodegas Ochoa Crianza Tempranillo begins with a very pleasing aroma of red and black cherry, cedar and licorice along with touches of vanilla and mocha. The medium to full-bodied wine tastes smooth, soft and juicy and has really well integrated spice. With really good balance and structure, this is just a pleasure to drink. Fine and slightly grippy tannins lead into the long, dry licorice filled finish which also features lingering touches of tobacco and more vanilla and mocha notes. Quite nice, indeed!
