That’s a pity because Pedroncelli makes a truly excellent example of the variety. The reviews on this wine are stellar with the 2018 garnering multiple 91-point scores, a Gold Medal at the Critics Challenge and a “Cellar Selection” designation among other accolades. Our Taste Rating here translates to 91-93 points. If you’re drinking it today 91 is a fair score, but we know first-hand just how amazingly these wines age and I’ve got no doubt it will reach at least a 93.
The Pedroncelli Merlot is made from all estate grapes from three vineyard blocks planted more than 25 years ago in the Dry Creek Valley. The wine was aged 12 months in American oak, 30% of which was new and 2,100 cases were produced.

The source for our Merlot comes from three vineyard blocks off of our estate vineyard located along Dry Creek Road from vineyard planted over 5 years beginning in 1990. Bench Vineyards, the name chosen for this wine, describes the natural terraces that flank Dry Creek Valley and rise gradually into the steep hills. Characterized by sloped topography and gravelly/rocky residual soils, the unique growing conditions combine to bring out the best in our Merlot.
Aromas are rich and enticing with hints of spice and ripe berries. Flavors of red plum, black tea and warm baking spices are showcased with a light oak toast and mocha notes. Medium bodied with rounded tannins follow through to a savory and lingering finish. A beautifully balanced wine.

The 2018 Pedroncelli Bench Vineyards Merlot opens with an absolutely lovely, almost dusty aroma of dark fruit with touches of spice, vanilla, cedar and licorice. It's a fantastic start.
It only takes one sip to know that this is another excellent wine from Pedroncelli. Smooth and very satisfying with that signature round Merlot mouthfeel, it features delicious juicy dark fruit intermingled with excellent baking spice. Everything just works together perfectly.
It ends with a dry, savory and long finish with a bit of that dustiness from the nose returning along with lingering juicy fruit and continuing spice.
Excellent! And this one is just a baby. As always with these wines from Pedroncelli if you can resist drinking them in the short term (good luck!) you will be highly rewarded once they have a few years of age.
