You can never have enough Sangiovese and today we have the return of a Super Tuscan Style beauty with a Perfect 10 Taste Rating. The 2018 vintage of this wine was a smash hit with our readers and somehow the 2019 is even better!
The 2019 Peterson Winery Il Granaio DCV Super Tuscan style Red is 67% Sangiovese from the Teldeschi Vineyard plus 17% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Cabernet Franc both from the Bradford Mountain Estate Vineyard. The wine was aged 26 months in 33% new French oak barrels and 67% 5-10 year-old neutral oak barrels plus another 2.5 years in bottle before release. Only available from the winery, just a tiny 150 cases were produced!
Just like our other extremely popular Peterson Winery deals, this very small production wine is made in their zero manipulation style, meaning no additives are used and the wine is not fined or filtered (which also makes it vegan friendly).
All of this comes at an expense, although the normal price tag of $36 is extremely reasonable for the quality. Of course, that’s not the way we roll at Reverse Wine Snob so for the next day we’re slashing that price…

Tasting Notes: Dark fruit aromatics fuse with striations of oak and traces of fine herbs and mineral-laced soil. A smooth entry flows into a mix of bright red and black fruit. Bathed by buoyant acidity, lively flavors of blackberry, cranberry and black cherry mingle with hints of strawberry, rhubarb and cedar, encompassing the palate. A subtle rustic earthiness and touches of minerality add layers of depth to this sophisticated super-Tuscan blend, while the well-balanced structure stays a step back, allowing the complexity of the fruit contributions to retain center stage.
Production Notes: Each spring, Jamie and I assess the previous vintage of Sangiovese and begin the process of deciding the blend for that year’s Il Granaio. In blending, we are guided by two simple rules—capture the essence of the Sangiovese variety from that vintage, and build on its core characters, to assemble the juiciest, most complex wine possible. The blending varietals and percentages will vary for each vintage.
For the 2019 Il Granaio, we combined 33% Bordeaux varietals — Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc — with 67% Sangiovese from the Teldeschi Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley to achieve the wine that we were seeking. We are pleased with the result, and think you will be, too.
Winemaker Notes: Our Il Granaio Sangiovese began with the 2000 vintage when Jamie convinced me that we could create a Sangiovese blend juicy, spicy and exotic enough for the “Super Tuscan” moniker (Sangiovese blended with non-traditional varieties). The wine quickly developed a following, and we’ve produced the Il Granaio Sangiovese every vintage since.
Food Pairing Notes: Try pairing with a soulful combination like smothered pork chops and dirty rice, or a more traditional meal of Tuscan black pepper beef over creamy polenta.

And now on to our review:
The 2019 Peterson Winery Il Granaio Dry Creek Valley Super Tuscan Style Red opens with a wonderful, harmonious aroma of black cherry and other savory dark fruits, plus lovely spice, cedar and touches of mint, licorice and earth. It’s a fabulous start!
Taking a sip reveals a smooth, luscious mouthfeel, remarkable balance and great structure and depth. This is so savory! The wine features similar flavors to the nose but they are put together wonderfully in the mouth. With great acidity this wine also has excellent food pairing potential with anything from a cheeseburger to all kinds of Italian fare. And while the previous vintage took a lot of air to get to a 10 Taste Rating, this is an immediate 10 right from the first pop and pour AND it keeps getting even better. Seriously, this might be a 10+.
It ends dry, juicy, amazingly long, savory and a bit grippy on the mouth-watering finish. It was even slightly better on day 2 but no patience is needed on this bottle as it is wonderful right away. Although, like all of the Peterson wines, I’m sure cellaring for a few years will bring great rewards as well.
I absolutely love this one, and we will be stocking up on it ourselves (but we’ll save you all a few bottles too).
