The 2021 Peterson Winery Il Granaio DCV Super Tuscan style Red is 84% Sangiovese from the Teldeschi and Spadoni vineyards plus 10% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot both from the Bradford Mountain Estate Vineyard. The wine was aged 25 months in 33% new French oak barrels and 67% 5-10 year-old neutral oak barrels plus another 2 years in bottle before release. Only available from the winery, just a tiny 130 cases were produced!
Just like our other extremely popular Peterson Winery deals, this very small production wine is made in their zero manipulation style, meaning no additives are used and the wine is not fined or filtered (which also makes it vegan friendly).

2021 Peterson Winery Il Granaio Sangiovese
Il Granaio (Italian for The Barn) is our bottling of a “Super Tuscan” style wine; Sangiovese blended with nontraditional varietals. Our 2021 Il Granaio is 84% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot. The wine was barrel aged for 25 months to integrate the varietals and add depth. Though ready to drink in the near term, its rich, ripe flavors will reward further cellaring. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Fred’s (Peterson) Vintaged View: Our Il Granaio Sangiovese began with the 2000 vintage when Jamie convinced me that we could create a Sangiovese blend juicy, spicy and exotic enough for the “Super Tuscan” moniker (Sangiovese blended with non-traditional varieties). The wine quickly developed a following, and we’ve produced the Il Granaio Sangiovese every vintage since. Each spring, Jamie and I assess the previous vintage of Sangiovese and begin the process of deciding the blend for that year’s Il Granaio. In blending, we are guided by two simple rules—capture the essence of the Sangiovese variety from that vintage, and build on its core characters, to assemble the juiciest, most complex wine possible. The blending varietals and percentages will vary for each vintage.
Tasting Notes: Blending Dry Creek Valley Sangiovese with our Bradford Mountain Estate Vineyard Bordeaux varietals creates dark delicious flavors with mouthwatering vibrancy. For this vintage, we blended in Merlot and Petit Verdot, enhancing the structure and depth that are apparent from the first whiff.
Subtle wood spice notes weave through dark aromatics of ripe blackberry and boysenberry. The smooth entry flows into bright acidity that enlivens the fusion of cherry, boysenberry, raspberry and traces of violet, loamy earth and savory herbs. Be sure to give this wine 30 or more minutes to breathe so it comes alive before sipping. Your patience will be duly rewarded.
A great wine to pair with grilled meats like pork tenderloin, tri tip or duck, but it will also shine when matched with an authentic Bolognese sauce served with tagliatelle.

And now on to our review:
The 2021 Peterson Winery Il Granaio Dry Creek Valley Super Tuscan Style Red opens with a wonderful, harmonious aroma of black cherry and other savory dark fruits, plus lovely spice, cedar and touches of mint, licorice and earth. It’s a fabulous start although I would give it an hour or two to breathe before drinking to really let it open up.
Taking a sip reveals a smooth, luscious mouthfeel, remarkable balance and great structure and depth. This is so savory! The wine features similar flavors to the nose but they are put together wonderfully in the mouth. With great acidity this wine also has excellent food pairing potential with anything from a cheeseburger to all kinds of Italian fare.
It ends dry, juicy, amazingly long, savory and a bit grippy on the mouth-watering finish. It was just as good on day 2. No patience is needed as the wine is wonderful right now although, like all of the Peterson wines, I’m sure cellaring for a few years will bring great rewards as well.
I absolutely love this one, and we will be stocking up on it ourselves (but we’ll save you all a few bottles too).
