From the bottle:
"Portal da Calcada" marks the entrance of the emblematic hotel Casa da Calcada in Amarante. This wine was produced from selected grape varieties, presenting a fruited aroma and a fresh and persistent flavor that express the unique character of the Vinho Verde DOC region. It reveals gastronomic aptitude, being especially adequate for accompanying fish dishes and seafood. It should be ideally served at the temperature of 8-10C.
11.5% Alcohol
"Gastronomic aptitude" -- that may be one of my new favorite phrases, but with this wine, like many from Vinho Verde, it is absolutely true. This wine also typifies exactly what we talked about last week -- a white blend made in a modern style from a region with a whole lot of history.
The 2015 Portal da Calcada Reserva Vinho Verde begins with a very inviting nose of green apple, honeysuckle, lemon and lime and it only gets better from there. Tasting the wine reveals just a slight amount of fizz along with tons of tart apple, melon and grapefruit with a touch of honeyed sweetness. The wine is vibrant and rich in the mouth with great acidity and some nice salty minerality that leads into the long finish filled with rich, tangy fruit.
