A easy to drink Portuguese red blend at a reasonable price, we review the Prazo De Roriz from Prats & Symington.
A blend of 30% Touriga Nacional, 20% Touriga Franca, 15% Tinta Roriz, 15% Tinta Barroca and 20% mixed varieties from Quinta de Roriz and Quinta de Perdiz in Cima Corgo, Douro, Portugal. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and has just 1 g/L of residual sugar.
We’ve stated it many times before but Portuguese red blends offer some of the best value in the wine world today. Those same grapes that make excellent Port wines can also make some absolutely wonderful table wines. Let’s check this one out.
Sample submitted for review. The wine has an SRP of $19 but can be found for as low as $15. It is imported by Premium Port Wines.
From the bottle:
The Prazo de Roriz is a worthy representation of the Douro style, known for its expression of delicious, full, fresh fruit. The Prazo wine is characterized by red fruits, particularly raspberries and cherries, and the Roriz terroir provides a distinct minerality and appealing peppery spice. Prazo de Roriz is made for drinking young, but with the potential for developing in the bottle for several years. “Prazo” (meaning lease) was the name originally given to the vineyard of Quinta de Roriz in the 18th Century.
Produced and Bottled by Prats & Symington
13.5% Alcohol
The 2022 Prazo de Roriz opens with a pleasing aroma of dark fruit and spice.
Tasting the wine reveals good depth and balance with lots of delicious fruit and good touches of spice throughout. This is very nice and easy to drink.
It ends dry, long and a bit grippy. It wasn’t quite as good on day 2 so either drink up or take steps to make it last (see our article “Keeping it Fresh – How To Store Open Wine” ).
