Sokol Blosser Evolution Oregon Pinot Noir - My Kind of Box

By: Jon Thorsen Published: October 23, 2020 Last Updated: May 23, 2021

High quality Willamette Valley Pinot Noir in a boxed wine, the Evolution Oregon Pinot Noir from Sokol Blosser.

Evolution Oregon Pinot Noir - My Kind of Box

100% Pinot Noir from Willamette Valley, Oregon in a 1.5L box. The wine is aged for about 3 months with a small amount of oak staves submerged in the stainless steel tanks and has about 5 g/L of residual sugar.

This box version is the exact same wine as the bottle version which received 92 points from James Suckling for both the 2017 and 2018 vintages (this 2019 vintage does not appear to have been rated yet). The only difference from the bottle version is that this one has to be labeled as just "Oregon" instead of Willamette Valley because the winery used a partner in California to package the box.

Sample submitted for review. The Sokol Blosser Evolution Oregon Pinot Noir has an SRP of $25 (the equivalent of $12.50 per 750ml bottle) which offers a significant savings from the SRP of $20 for a single bottle. The box can be found for as low as $21.

    From the box:

Now this is my kind of box! We've long lamented the tendency to view this "cheap" format as an excuse to fill it with "cheap" wine but today we've got one of the rare producers who simply see it as just another format for the same, high-quality wine they put into a bottle. (Hint, you can find more of these on list of the best box wines and it's why you don't see many of the "big names" on that list.)

The 2019 Sokol Blosser Evolution Oregon Pinot Noir begins with a very pleasing aroma of strawberry, cherry, cola, leather, licorice, mint, earth and more.

It only takes one sip to realize this is tasty, true Pinot! It features very good balance and lovely, slightly candied fruit flavors with just the right of amount of tartness plus a super smooth mouthfeel. Add in some nice touches of spice, licorice and just a bit of earthiness and this is crowd-pleasing Pinot. This box will be gone in no time.

It ends dry and long. This is significantly better than the recently reviewed Petiole from Trader Joe's at just a couple bucks more. A killer deal for true Willamette Valley juice!
