Vin Gris? Isn’t that just a Rosé? Well, technically yes in that it is both are wines made from red grapes, but there is a distinction.
When you squeeze a grape, the juice runs mostly clear whether it is a white grape or a red grape. Red wines get their dark color from spending a lot time in contact with their dark colored grape skins during the winemaking process.
Rosé wines typically have a short amount of maceration time (time where the juice is in contact with the skins), which gives them their distinctive pale red or pink color.
Vin gris wines, on the other hand, are traditionally made just like a white wine in that the juice isn’t allowed to spend any significant amount of time in contact with the grape skins, which results in a very light colored wine even though it comes from red grapes just like a rosé.
Today we have an excellent example of vin gris coming from dark-skinned Grenache Noir grapes (not Grenache Blanc, which is an entirely different white grape variety). It is harvested from the Bains Vineyard in the underrated region of Suisun Valley, which is just to the east of Napa Valley.
Many people are calling the Suisun Valley what Napa Valley used to be before it became so commercial. In any case, it’s a great spot for quality grapes without paying the same premium Napa carries.
And while some winemakers will opportunistically just “bleed off” some of the juice from the production of their red wines to make a vin gris, that is not the case here.
JDB, the producer of today’s wine, harvested these grapes two weeks earlier than the grapes from the same vines that are used for the red wine production, in order to produce the best vin gris possible. Mission accomplished, we say.

Grenache grapes for the Vin Gris were harvested two weeks before the grapes destined for the Red Wine program. The aim was to maintain a fresh acidity and lighter alcohol influence. A “feral yeast” fermentation commenced in Stainless Steel drums and we bottled six months later to protect this delicate balance.

The 2019 De Motib. Stellae Martis Vin Gris of Grenache opens with quite an enticing aroma of cherry, strawberry and other berry fruits along with some interesting dried herbal notes and a touch of blood orange.
Tasting quite fresh and full of rich fruit with great depth and a touch of sweetness, this is downright delicious! Featuring a wonderful smooth and round mouthfeel and great balance, this is the definition of refreshing. I love this!
It ends dry, savory, quite long and even a bit grippy on the juicy, lip smacking finish that also features some lingering blood orange and strawberry notes.
FYI, if you’re an astronomy lover, you may be interested to know the label art (and the wine name) is from a diagram of how Mars appeared in the sky, as observed by Johannes Kepler in his famous book Astronomia Nova published in 1609.
