Monferrato sits at an important intersection in NW Italy and Southern Europe. Protected by the Alps to the North and the Mediterranean sea to the south, the area has long been a seat of European power dating back to the Holy Roman empire. Today, food and wine are focal points of the economy. The larger Monferrato area encompasses well know regions including Alba and Asti. If you've ever had authentic white truffles, they are often foraged in this special area every October.

La Bollina Winery is one to watch. This impressive Italian estate is creating innovative, fun, amazing value wines. Thanks to its high-quality and uniqueness, this winery has quickly become Luca Maroni's darling, who has blessed it with impressive reviews year after year.

La Bollina is located in Serravalle Scrivia AL, Italy. A municipality in the province of Alessandria, about 62 miles southeast of Turin. This historical territory was for centuries the residence of the Marchioness Figari of Genova. A 300-acre winery, surrounded by hills and chestnut forests, is where La Bollina's magnificent wines are born.

Andrea Bernardini, La Bollina's consultant, is a passionate winemaker who has hit numerous home runs. In 2007, he graduated from Pisa, one of the best schools of enology in Italy. He earned his chops at Poggio Bonelli and Ruffino in Tuscany and trained in South Africa, Romania and Greece. After several years of experience, he is now a flying winemaker blending tradition and modern techniques to obtain high-quality wines with respect to the expression of the different grapes and terroir in which he works.

This wine is 100% Barbera, produced by La Bollina. This amazing, easy-to-drink wine will become your new go-to. It is truly a wine to experience and enjoy. With 96 points, this wine is one of Luca Maroni's "Best Italian Wines" of the vintage.

Tasting Notes: This is 100% Barbera. Mostly stainless with a touch of oak, allows the fruit to shine. If you love figs, blueberry, and blackberry flavors with a tense backbone of smooth tannins, and mocha, then you'll love this wine.

The 2020 Pomaro Monferrato Rosso Piemonte Barbera from La Bollina opens with quite an attractive aroma of blackberry, red and black cherry and a little spice.

Tasting the wine reveals deep, rich, tart dark fruit flavors similar to the nose with just the right touch of spice plus a little licorice. With a smooth mouthfeel this is a delicious example of this variety, coming straight from the source (Piedmont). If you've gotten in on any of our California Barbera deals, it makes a great comparison point.

We drank it with a pizza and it worked wonderfully. It will also pair great with pretty much anything in red sauce, lots of different cheeses and salami.

It ends dry, a bit chewy and quite long and was just as good on day 2.

The Italian wine critic Luca Maroni scores this wine at 96 points. We're not huge fans of his rating scale, which is quite different than the one used by most reviewers, but this is a very good wine. We'll put it right in the middle of our 9 Taste Rating, which translates to 92 points on the traditional 100-point scale.
