Trader Joe's Grand Reserve Sonoma Meritage - Crazy Good

A Meritage (Bordeaux-style blend) of Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma County, California. The wine is aged for 26 months in French oak barrels.

The Trader Joe’s Grand Reserve Sonoma Meritage is available exclusively at Trader Joe’s and sells for just $12.99.

From Trader Joe’s:

In the hills of Sonoma County, tucked between the ocean and Napa Valley – the California sun keeps the days warm, and the winds off the Pacific keep the nights cool – perfect conditions for growing rich, full-bodied grapes, like the ones used to make Trader Joe’s Grand Reserve Sonoma Meritage Lot 92. Comprised of an expertly crafted blend of Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon, our latest Grand Reserve Meritage exemplifies the best of both Meritage and Sonoma itself: big, complex flavors of blackberry, currant, and ripe plum; an elegant, lingering finish; and finely structured tannins – thanks to the 26-month-long aging in French Oak barrels.

$12.99 for a wine that spent 26 months in French oak barrels? This is the stuff Trader Joe’s legends are made of…

The 2013 Trader Joe’s Grand Reserve Sonoma Meritage Lot 92 begins with a very pleasing aroma full of ripe blackberry and plum along with licorice, vanilla and spice.

It only takes one sip to spot the significant oak aging on this one. Right from the get-go it tastes like a much more expensive wine, although giving it some time to breathe brings out even more. The wine is smooth and savory with fine tannins and it has lots of dark ripe fruit, beautifully integrated spice and plenty of vanilla. This is a wonderful full-bodied blend of varieties.

It ends with a dry, long and grippy finish of lingering dark fruit, licorice, cola and spice and just a hint of green pepper. This is lovely stuff that won’t last long in the store, so get a move on!
