For today’s offer we are going once again to Philipp Wittmann and the limestone soils of Rheinhessen region between Pfalz and Rheingau on the Rhine river in Germany, an area where grapes have been grown all the way back to Roman times.
Produced with a combination of estate fruit as well as fruit from other local growers, the grapes were all grown organically (and biodynamically) and harvested by hand from vines an average of 60-years-old.
The wines are fermented using natural yeasts and then aged 50% in stainless steel and 50% in large, neutral wooden casks – a fabulous combination that preserves the fresh, bright fruit character but also adds a silky texture and mouthfeel. With around 6-9 g/L of residual sugar and slightly higher acidity, all the wines taste mostly dry with some pleasing touches of sweetness.

The Wittmann estate has as its foundation the pursuit of balanced wines that have tension, depth and intensity, but are at the same time fresh and elegant. Owner Philipp Wittmann has no doubt that this complex character can only be created in the vineyard, so attention to detail in the viticulture is of primary importance. Philipp works for natural balance in the vineyards, in order to harvest grapes that have fully developed flavors and a well-balanced structure.

While all three of the Wittmann 100 Hills Dry Rieslings have a lot of similarities, we’ll break down the differences here.
To start the 2021 Wittmann 100 Hills Riesling Dry opens with a very pleasing aroma of green apple, pear, honeysuckle, lemon, nectarine and a touch of chalkiness.
Taking a sip reveals a refreshing and zesty wine with similar flavors to the nose but the fruit is fleshy and even a bit juicy in the mouth. With some steely minerality, a lovely and lively mouthfeel, and great acidity this is a vibrant, very well balanced and delicious wine.
It ends with a dry, long, lip-smacking finish that dares you not to take another sip!
As you would expect, the 2021 is the freshest tasting of the three wines but the 2017 and 2013 also add in some other interesting touches.
The 2017 Wittmann 100 Hills Riesling Dry is not quite as fruity on the nose, but adds in some salty minerality when tasting. It tastes perhaps a touch sweeter than the 2021. It also has great depth and a bit more texture on the mouthfeel. Drink this with lemon chicken!
And finally the 2013 Wittmann 100 Hills Riesling Dry still smells surprisingly fresh at 10 years of age. The freshness continues when tasting as well, with flavors quite similar to both of the other wines but with perhaps a touch less minerality. And just like both of the other vintages, it still features that lovely, long, lip-smacking finish.
