Crazy For The Calatayud – Bodegas Filon Garnacha

2011-Bodegas-Filon-Garnacha
It’s hard to believe this wine is only $8.

100% Garnacha from Calatayud, Spain.

SRP of around $10 and available widely for $8.

From the bottle:

“The incredible composition of land that make up the slopes of of many hills in the district of Calatayud, in most cases covered with slate and very poor in nutrients, allowing the cultivation of vineyards that produce wonderful grapes Grenache, which gives highly concentrated and elegant wines with aromas reminiscent of cherries and black plums.

14.5% Alcohol”

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again. We’re simply crazy for the Calatayud region in Spain. In fact, this may be one of the best value locations in the whole world right now with tons of delicious wine made from old vine Garnacha for well under $15. Here are five of my favorites that I’ve covered recently:

  • Atteca Old Vines Garnacha 2010 – Powerfully good Garnacha.
  • The Show Garnacha 2010 – No Circus Clowns Needed.
  • Los Dos Grenache + Syrah 2010 – Another Spanish Wonder.
  • Las Rocas Garnacha 2009 – Garnacha Love.
  • Evodia Old Vines Garnacha 2010 – A Simply Superb Bulk Buy! Previously #1 on our Top 10 Red list!

You can add today’s Bulk Buy to this superb list (and to the next Top 10 list).

The 2011 Bodegas Filon Garnacha begins with a very pleasant aroma of menthol, black cherry and a bit of smoke. The wine tastes smooth, supple, and harmonious. The dark, rich fruit, cola, spice and mineral notes just flow together perfectly. The savory flavors continue on the long finish and are joined by some nice spicy mineral notes and a hint of smoke that lingers in the mouth for a good time. It’s hard to believe this wine is only $8!
