This noble wine is made with our estate grown grapes, harvested and sorted by hand, from selected blocks of our vineyard in Garzon, Uruguay. The wines are aged in French oak barrels. The grape clusters are handled with care to allow them to express their varietal character and the uniqueness of our particular terroir.
Located only 11 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, numerous small blocks cover the slopes and hills and benefit from varying micro-climates and different levels of humidity and canopy management. This allows the vines to develop with maximum exposure to the sun providing rich fruit.
It’s been a long time since we’ve reviewed a Tannat from Uruguay so we were delighted to spot this one on the shelves of our local Costco. We long ago predicted the Uruguayan version of this big, tannic grape would take off, and while we seemed to be a bit premature in that prediction we’d still be delighted to see it happen.
The 2016 Bodega Garzon Tannat Reserve begins with an enticing, delicious aroma of ripe, dark fruit along with licorice and lots of varied spice notes. Tasting the wine reveals tons of deep, dark, sweet fruit flavors. It’s full-bodied and tannic but also very smooth and it gets even better as it has time in the glass. This is right up our alley! Lovely notes of dried herbs float under the fruit and lead into the long, dry, savory finish. Fantastic.
