South African golfing icon David Frost has always had a passion for fine wine. In fact, it was through picking grapes on his family’s wine farm near Stellenbosch that a young David earned enough pocket money to play golf, launching him on his successful professional career. The Frost family has been in the South African wine business for over 60 years and David’s own wine brand has been winning awards since his first wine launched in 1997 with a consistent focus on quality grapes and superb winemaking.

Don’t let the low price and the screwcap fool you on our latest Trader Joe’s pick, this is no fruit bomb and it’s definitely not a pop and pour proposition. This is a serious, sophisticated blend that absolutely needs some time to open up so plan accordingly.

The 2015 David Frost Trader Joe’s Red begins with notes of strawberry, black cherry, black pepper, a touch of smoked meat, coffee and even a bit of an earthy streak. This is not your typical $7 wine aroma and that’s a very good thing. Pretty much all the same flavors from the nose are present when tasting and they combine surprisingly well in the mouth. Mineral and licorice notes along with a touch of mulberry develop on the mid-palate and lead into the dry, long finish featuring more coffee and a hint of tobacco. This wine should age quite nicely in your cellar over the next 2-3 years.
