And while single varietal Mourvedre from France can sometimes be a bit challenging due to its abundant structure and tannins, the examples we have today are quite approachable. We loved them.
Besides the deliciousness, the thing we found most interesting about these 3 wines is how different each vintage is, despite being made from the same vineyard. The philosophy of the winery is a big reason for that as they simply aim to maximize what nature gives them each year:
We’re confident that the sites we have selected are special and we think our job is to bring those sites to your taste buds. As such we’re not aiming for some “house style” that you can rely on to make all our wines taste alike — where’s the fun in that? We feel nature does the heavy lifting and we do our best not to get in the way. Our approach is “less is more”. We pick the fruit with an aim towards limiting additions. We rely on native yeasts to ferment. We raise up the wines in large neutral oak puncheons to create a complete wine that has been educated without being turned into a snob. Wines are bottled without fining or filtration. Small amounts of SO2 are used to prevent spoilage.
A filament is any one connecting thread in a larger tapestry of things.
It could be found among the roots and living soil of a conscientiously grown vineyard tied together in symbiosis with its environment. It could be a couple of California boys supporting growers they believe in and highlighting special places. It could be you discovering unique expressions of grapes grown in unique places. If a wine is bottled sunshine let us be the filament that lets that sun shine.
Aged for a long time in barrel (17 months for the 2018, 20 months for the 2019 and 27 months for the 2021) these wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered to let all the goodness of the grape shine through (and also make them vegan friendly).

Summer 2026 Shipping Info
Shipping is a flat $9.99 per order, no matter how many packs you buy. This applies to both Summer Shipments AND Summer Holds. Summer Shipments also have an additional charge built into the product price for the heat protection package. Here’s how it works:
Summer Ship (+$8 for the Heat Protection Package) – Packages ship in styrofoam and use refrigerated shipping. This includes refrigerated trucks to local hubs for the South, Midwest and East Coast and internal refrigeration (ice packs) in boxes for the West Coast (AZ, CA, ID, NV, OR, WA). Final delivery will be on regular UPS trucks without refrigeration (just like last year), thus the reason for the styrofoam.
Note that unlike last year, packages will not go 2-day air as the refrigerated trucks are a better option, however this will add additional transit time. Trucks will only pick up from our shipper once per week so with our normal order processing time of up to 10 days before orders are sent out, packages will likely take anywhere from 2-3 weeks to arrive in-home.
These orders have an additional cost of $8 built into the product price for this Heat Protection Package. It is NOT possible (nor would it be advisable!) to purchase a deal with summer shipping without also including the Heat Protection Package.
Summer Hold – Buy your wine now and have your shipment held in a temperature controlled warehouse for delivery in October! While we take every precaution we can with our Summer Shipping protocol, we also know that many of you travel or live in very hot areas where you don’t want to risk it (or you simply detest styrofoam).

Before we get to each wine, here’s a bit more about this excellent vineyard:
Alder Springs Vineyard is located in Mendocino County AVA just north of the town of Laytonville and 150 miles north of San Francisco. The vineyard sits in the 6,000-acre Alder Springs Ranch, a forested wonderland with steep terrain reaching heights of 4,000 feet. The climate is moderated by the vineyard’s elevation and proximity to the Pacific Ocean, a mere 12 miles away.
The vineyard is meticulously farmed by Stu Bewley who has been aptly described as a boss made up of lesser bosses. He planted the first block in 1993 after discovering a location with the ideal combination of sun, soil, and drainage. The 140-acre vineyard is planted on decomposed sandstone at elevations between 1,700 and 2,700 feet. This is a cool climate vineyard where the grape yields are low and the concentration of flavor is high. We are fortunate to work with such an amazing site and vineyard team.
Let’s take a look at the 2018 vintage first.

2018 Filaments Alder Springs Vineyard Mourvèdre
Made from 100% Mourvèdre that was completely destemmed and fermented using native yeast. Cap management consisted of twice daily punchdowns. Élevage was in 500L puncheon for 17 months. Unfined and unfiltered. 68 cases made.
Seductively spicy fresh-cracked black pepper atop blueberry granita served to you in a glade of violets. All the allure of a picnic minus the ants!

And now on to our review:
The 2018 Filaments Alder Springs Mourvedre opens with very pleasing aromas of dark fruit, spice, violets and white and black pepper with touches of licorice and a leathery, meaty note. It’s very harmonious and a fantastic start!
The wine tastes simply fantastic — this is an excellent example of Mourvedre! It features a silky smooth and dynamic mouthfeel with a just a bit of tannic grip and has wonderful layers of flavors similar to the nose including juicy dark fruit and well integrated spice.
It ends dry and very long with lots of layers that linger. It was just as good on day 2. We loved it.
2018 FILAMENTS ALDER SPRINGS MOURVEDRE

Next we’ve got the 2019 vintage, which is similar in style to 2018 with perhaps a touch more oak influence.

2019 Filaments Alder Springs Vineyard Mourvedre
The fruit was harvested on October 16th, 2019. After being completely destemmed it went through a natural fermentation lasting 14-days with twice daily punch downs. The wine was racked to a neutral 400L puncheon and 228L barrique. Bottled unfined and unfiltered after 20 months of élevage. 41 cases made.
Like a cool mountain stream if that stream consisted of blood orange, crushed raspberries, rose water, and resinous herbs cascading over tumbled river rocks. Don’t let the youthful nose and seductive red blush to this wine fool you; there is grip and tension in the mouth that either calls for charcuterie or a dark corner of your cellar.

And now on to our review:
The 2019 Filaments Alder Springs Mourvedre opens with lovely aromas of dark fruit, spice, dried herbs, black licorice and a little black pepper. It’s a great start.
The wine tastes smooth and juicy and overall is similar to the 2018, although it may be a tad simpler and have a bit more oak influence. Once again it has lovely layers of flavors throughout.
It ends dry, long and juicy on the lingering finish and was just as good on day 2.
2019 FILAMENTS ALDER SPRINGS MOURVEDRE
Taste: 9 (91-93 points) Cost: 4
OVERALL RATING: 7.8

Finally we’ve got the very different 2021 vintage, a fresher, lighter version of the variety that makes for an absolutely fascinating contrast to the other two wines.

2021 Filaments Alder Springs Vineyard Mourvedre
The fruit was harvested on September 29th, 2021. After being completely destemmed it went through a natural fermentation lasting 22-days with twice daily punch downs. The wine was racked to a neutral 500L puncheon and 228L barrique. Bottled unfined and unfiltered after 27 months of élevage. 56 cases made.
The 2021 Alder Springs Mourvèdre isn’t floral per se but offers the limpid fragrant beauty of violet blossoms; of toasted orange skin. Accompanying this is the bright red fruit of fresh cranberries and crushed raspberry. There is some dark savoriness lurking in the background (maybe it’s that finish of fresh ground cinnamon that seems to be a hallmark of this vineyard) but for now fresh juiciness sings from the glass popped and propped by a high-toned white pepper note. Texturally there is no friction in throwing back this wine. The acidity is sufficient to keep it fresh but the lighter texture and the shy tannins ensure that if you serve this with even the slightest chill you’re going to have to be careful lest you turn around and find an empty bottle!

And now on to our review:
The 2021 Filaments Alder Springs Mourvedre opens with lovely dark fruit but also some red berry fruit as well. A bit brighter than the other two vintages, it also features baking spice and some violet floral notes. It’s a harmonious and enticing start.
Tasting reveals a fresher, lighter version of Mourvedre that is juicy and easy to drink with very smooth and easy tannins. It features similar flavors to nose with good balance and acidity. As we said, it’s a fascinating contrast to the 2018 and 2019 vintages, which is a bit surprising given this is the same vineyard and that this wine spent substantially longer in barrel (27 months, versus 17 and 20 months), which we wouldn’t necessarily associate with a lighter, fresher wine.
It ends dry, smooth, juicy and satisfying on the long, savory finish and was similar on day 2. This is very nice! We put it at the high end of our 9 Taste Rating at 92-93 points.
