The pioneering De Loach family, well known for their eponymous brand as well as their major part in getting the Russian River Valley recognized as its own AVA, has been growing grapes and making wine in this area since the 1970s.
Here’s how Hook & Ladder came to be:
After the sale of their acclaimed De Loach Vineyards in 2003 to French vintners Boisset Family Estates, Cecil and Christine continued to farm and make wines from the more than 148 acres of vineyard Russian River Valley – and moved on to their next winery project.
In 2003, they launched Hook & Ladder Winery on Olivet Road, just down the street from their original De Loach Vineyards. Named for Cecil’s 17-year career as a San Francisco firefighter, Hook & Ladder is helmed today by grandson Jason De Loach, an accomplished winemaker who joined the winery in 2006.
Hook & Ladder is an “estate” producer, specializing in small bottlings of Pinot Noir, “Old Vine” Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-style blends sourced from the family’s sustainably-farmed vineyards in Russian River Valley and its sub-appellation, Chalk Hill. The winery also produces and sells estate-grown Olive Oil from trees grown at their Los Amigos Ranch.
These days, Cecil and Christine can often be found at the winery they founded, helping out in the office, cellar and occasionally in the tasting room, which is festooned with fire station t-shirts given to the winery by visiting firefighters from all around the world.

2022 Hook & Ladder Severson Ranch Pinot Noir
RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEYThe latest expression of the youngest vineyard site in the Hook & Ladder portfolio shows off its burgeoning maturity. This select and limited offering brings a more prominent aromatic quality than in years past. The nose features layers of blueberry, cinnamon and lightly roasted Columbian coffee. The palate is vibrant yet elegant, while fresh picked raspberry’s jump to life and hold through the mid-palate. A finish of ripe cranberry, nutmeg and wild mushroom make every sip memorable.
WINEMAKING: We use old world techniques, whole berries, and whole clusters to make our Pinot Noir in small batches that we “punch-down” up to three times a day. After native yeast fermentation the wine is aged in French oak barrels for up to 10 months to achieve optimum balance and complexity.

And now on to our review:
The 2022 Hook & Ladder Severson Ranch Russian River Valley Pinot Noir opens with a nose of dark berries, a little cranberry, some earthy notes and touches of baking spice, leather, coffee. It’s a great start with a lot of harmonious things going on.
Taking a sip reveals a smooth, luscious Pinot with all the same touches from the nose combining quite harmoniously in the mouth. This is really just lovely after some time in the glass. It features great complexity with nice touches of well-integrated spice throughout plus continuing notes of earth, coffee and more.
It ends dry, juicy and extremely long on the lingering finish. It was just as smooth and harmonious on day 2 with perhaps even a bit more depth. We put this at the high end of our 9 Taste Rating at 92-93 points.
