The Story: Chris Dearden has been crafting fine wines in Napa Valley for over 25 years. Wine has been a part of his family life since childhood, where it was served regularly at dinner as a celebration of everyday meals. The third generation Californian was born and raised in the San Joaquin Valley town of Porterville and always had an aptitude and love for agriculture and life sciences.
The Dearden Vineyard is located on a 12-acre parcel on Las Amigas Road in the heart of the Napa-Carneros region of Napa Valley where our winery is located. It is the coolest climate area in the Napa Valley and is the birthplace of some of the finest Chardonnays and Pinot noirs produced anywhere in the world. This vineyard was planted in 2006 and is now channeling the full flavor and aroma profile that will continue for decades. The clonal selections of Pinot noir are integral to producing a wine of depth, texture and character. The five clones we planted (115, Pommard, 667, 459 and Calera) were selected for their ability to craft a single vineyard wine from several distinct clones. Yields on this high quality vineyard average a meager 2 tons per acre.
This Pinot Noir also as a long line of high scores in the low to mid-90s, vintage after vintage. This recently released bottle has a 92-point rating from James Suckling and gets 92-93 points from us.

PAIRINGS: Enjoy with seared ahi tuna, beef carpaccio, duckOur 2023 vintage Sleeping Giant Pinot Noir opens on the nose with tea leaves, dried rose and raspberry, but slowly evolves into an essence of peony, lilac and cardamom. Initially on the palate, we find inviting flavors of muddled strawberry, forest floor and graham cracker, opening up to reveal secondary notes of river stone and sage.
2023 was a long and cool vintage, we waited until late September & early October to pick the 5 clones of Pinot noir. This long hang time allowed for rich development of flavor while the moderate temperature allowed for the fruit to retain a freshness and balanced acidity that shines through. This Pinot noir is ready to be opened now, or cellared for 5-10 years, and will only improve. Every year each of the clones are harvested, fermented and barrel aged separately to allow the clonal expression to stay at the forefront. After 14 months in a mix of new and neutral French Oak, every barrel is tasted and an assemblage of the best barrels is formed by winemaker Chris. The 2023 vintage of the Sleeping Giant Estate Pinot Noir contains a high percentage of our Pommard clone, on the west side of the driveway.

And now on to our review:
The 2023 Sleeping Giant Dearden Vineyard Napa Valley Carneros Pinot Noir opens with a very pleasing aroma of cranberry, black cherry, a little tomato plant and lots of herbal notes plus some floral notes and baking spice. Even more comes out as you swirl and sniff including touches of blackberry and black tea. It’s a great start.
The wine tastes smooth and bright and features all the same flavors as the nose plus zesty acidity. Elegant and delicious, this is a really lovely example of Pinot Noir. It keeps on getting better as it breathes too, revealing more depth and layers to discover. Take your time, this is a fun one!
It ends dry, soft, a bit juicy and very long and was similar on day 2. We put this at the high end of our 9 Taste Rating at 92-93 points.
