Lucas & Lewellen Toccata Classico - Harmonious

By: Jon Thorsen Published: June 29, 2019 Last Updated: August 15, 2022

An authentic tasting Super Tuscan style wine from Santa Barbara County, the Lucas & Lewellen Toccata Classico.

Lucas & Lewellen Toccata Classico - Harmonious

50% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, 5% Freisa and 5% Petit Verdot from the Los Alamos and Valley View estate vineyards in Santa Barbara County, California. The wine spends 18 months in French oak.

Sample submitted for review. The Lucas & Lewellen Toccata Classico has an SRP of $29 (Saturday Splurge) and is available at that price. Only 346 cases were produced.

    From the bottle:

Crafted from the most celebrated grape varieties of Italy and France, Toccata Classico is a blend built around a foundation of Sangiovese (50%), with additions of Merlot (5%), Cabernet Sauvignon (30%), Cabernet Franc (5%), Petit Verdot (5%), and the rare and precious Freisa (5%). The blend provides marvelous nuances of flavors from each varietal. Toccata grapes are grown in our Los Alamos and Valley View Vineyards within Santa Barbara County.

    14.1% Alcohol

The 2015 Lucas & Lewellen Toccata Classico begins with beautiful perfumed purple aromas of violets and ripe blackberry along with raspberry, vanilla, pepper, spice and coffee. I could smell this one all day! The wine tastes delicious and just like it came from Italy. Smooth, candied, ripe, tart, fresh and juicy fruit is layered with black pepper, spice, dried herbs and vanilla. Thanks to some good acidity it also goes great with food (pizza and pasta especially). Slightly chewy tannins lead into the long, sweet tart finish.
