And what wines they are. The Merlot garnered an incredible 98-points at the 2022 Harvest Terroir Challenge this last November, also winning Double Gold, Best of Class and Best of Dry Creek Valley designations. (We agree giving it a Perfect 10 Taste Rating.)
Made from 100% Merlot, the wine is aged 25 months in 25% new French oak and 75% 3-year-old French oak. Just 100 cases were produced, and it normally sells for $40.
The newly released Zinfandel is just as impressive and also easily gets a Perfect 10 Taste Rating (94+ points).
Made with 84% Zinfandel plus 8% Petite Sirah and 8% Carignane, the wine is aged for 22 months in 30% new French oak with the balance in 3 to 7-year-old neutral barrels. 300 cases were produced, and it normally sells for $42.
And, as always, these small batch wines are produced using Peterson Winery's "zero manipulation" philosophy eschewing additives and letting the true flavors of the grape and the particular vintage shine through. (And since they are not fined or filtered, they are also vegan friendly).

Let's take a look at the Merlot first.

When we first planted Merlot in our Bradford Mountain Estate Vineyard in the 1980s, it was mostly used as a blending component for our Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Estate Cabernet Franc. In the mid and late 90s, my father bottled small amounts of Merlot to showcase the delicious depth of flavors capable from this varietal. These wines have held up well for over 20 years.
After a 10-year hiatus of not bottling a varietal Merlot, the quality of the grapes in 2012 convinced us to give this noble variety another round in the spotlight. In years when the grapes from our mountain vineyard are of exceptional depth, we will continue to produce a Merlot to satisfy its fervent fans.
Combining all the soft, plush quality that Merlot is known for with the structure from grapes grown at our mountain vineyard site makes for a wine I am truly proud of and never shy to share at any gathering.
Tempting aromatics of rich vanillin oak threaded with traces of ripe red fruit fill the nose. The round entry leads into a silken mouthfeel laced with lively acidity and bright flavors. A lovely cherry and wild blackberry essence embraces the palate, with traces of black plum, huckleberry and rhubarb joining in near the finish. Hints of sage and mocha add interest and balance to this expressive, elegant Merlot.
The perfect wine to pair with rack of lamb with a Merlot glaze and cherry reduction sauce, or seared wild duck breast served over wild mushroom risotto.

The 2018 Peterson Winery Bradford Mountain Vineyard Merlot begins with a complex, welcoming aroma of dark fruit, dusty spice, vanilla, a little cedar, a little leather, a little cigar box and much more. It continues to develop even more secondary notes as it has time to breathe.
It only takes one sip to know that this is some truly fantastic Merlot! Featuring an amazing smooth, lush, comforting mouthfeel, the wine is wonderfully balanced and has well-integrated spice complementing the dark fruit all the way through the finish.
It ends dry, very long and a bit grippy. It does need an hour or two to open up but then this is the definition of harmonious. It was just as good on day 2.

And now on to the Zin!

We have a history with mountain wines and mountain vineyards going back to 1979, when I first laid eyes on Mount Eden Vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains and fell in love with the intensity of mountain fruit. I carried that devotion for mountain wines with me when I moved up to Dry Creek Valley in 1983 to develop a vineyard and build my house on Bradford Mountain.
This wine encapsulates all of the best qualities found in mountain grown Zinfandels from the Dry Creek Valley appellation. Poorer soils and colder nights harness and preserve more of the bright acidity and freshness in the grapes. More sunlight hours at the higher elevation means darker, richer fruit. Unlike benchland Zins, mountain Zins have a peppery quality and more black fruit character (think wild blackberry).
In the 2018 Estate Vineyard Zinfandel, we combined wine from our head-trained block, as well as our trellised rows of Zin, with 8% each of Petite Sirah and Carignane. The result was a delicious wine with a perfect balance of structure and flavors.
Tempting aromatics of luscious vine-ripened blackberries laced with pepper and cedar spice greet the nose. With the first sip, juicy berry flavors burst in mid-palate. Spicy flavors of cinnamon, cedar and white pepper, along with hints of black licorice, quickly join the rich berry essence as they fuse and linger into the finish. As the wine opens, the beautiful balance between the spice-laced fruit and integrated structure shines through.
This wine can be savored solo, and will also pair perfectly with spicy blueberry pork tenderloin served with creamy scalloped potatoes or, for something different but equally delicious, try with seafood arrabbiata over linguine.

The 2018 Peterson Winery Bradford Mountain Vineyard Zinfandel opens with a lovely, strong, enticing aroma of black cherry, blackberry, black pepper, succulent sage and lots of other wonderful spice and herbal notes.
The wine tastes super delicious! I love the addition of Petite Sirah and Carignane here. The wine is rich and full of absolutely delicious juicy fruit along with well-integrated spice throughout. Smooth and balanced, this is just fantastic.
It ends dry, very long and very satisfying. It was just as good on day 2.
