Portada Winemakers Selection Red – A $5.99 Find

By: Jon Thorsen Last Updated: December 30, 2019

Portada Winemakers Selection Red - A $5.99 Find
The Portada Winemakers Selection Red, a uniquely tasty Portuguese red blend.

A blend of Tinta Roriz, Alicante Bouschet, Cabernet Sauvignon, Caladoc, Castelao, Pinot Noir and Touriga Nacional from three estates in Lisboa, Portugal. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged for one month in bottle before release.

The Portada Winemakers Selection Red has an SRP of $10 and is available for just $5.99 at Costco which is several dollars less than any other retailer. Imported by Tri-Vin Imports.

From the bottle:

This deep, ruby red, medium-bodied wine has berry fruit flavours and a beautiful balance.

Produced in the wine region of Lisboa in Portugal, where the low rolling vineyards lie between the Tagus River and the Atlantic Ocean. Here the grapes benefit from the warm sun and cool maritime breezes.

Enjoy the taste of Portugal with DFJ Vinhos.

Winemaker: Jose Neiva Correla

12.5% Alcohol

We’ve long been fans of wines from Portugal for their extreme value. In fact, we enjoy the wines so much that we recently teamed up with Wine Tourism in Portugal to create our own “Author Tour” with our recommendations for a custom luxury tour through the Oporto and Douro regions of Portugal. You can find all the details here.

The 2011 DFJ Vinhos Portada Winemakers Selection Red begins with a pleasant aroma of plum and blackberry that’s a little smoky and meaty. Tasting the wine reveals plenty of rich, sweet berry (and a bit raisiny) fruit bit raisiny with the smokiness from the nose continuing. A streak of blood orange emerges mid-palate and lasts well into the long finish. This is a really succulent medium to full bodied wine. Once again Portugal shows how sub $10 red blends are done, in fact; it’s really a rather unique tasting experience — this wine has a lot of character which you don’t typically find at such a low price. Highly recommended.

As always you can find an updated list of all our recommended wines from Costco as well as more tips and tricks for shopping the store here.
