Amador County in the Sierra Foothills is special spot, especially for Italian varietals. (And let me tell you, we LOVE Italian wine.) With nearly 600 acres of vines 65+ years old, winemaking goes back to the Gold Rush of 1849. There are still several vineyards (of the 40 or so total) which had their start in the 19th century.

The 2019 Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Barbera is 100% Barbera from the Shenandoah Valley in Amador County, California. The wine is aged for 20 months in French oak and has less than 2 g/L of residual sugar. 1,380 cases were produced.
From the winery:
Grown on steep mountainous terrain in the higher elevations of the Shenandoah Valley of Amador County, California. 2019 Spring during flowering was cold and dreary which caused a 50% decline in crop yields at harvest. Because of low yields the long and drawn out harvest produced exceptional flavor and extractive wines.
Produced in the Italian, old world food friendly style.
Dark color with flavors reminiscent of strawberries and blueberries. This spicy well-structured wine has a bright red fruit finish.
14.9% Alcohol
The 2019 Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Barbera compares very favorably to both the 2017 and 2018 vintages. It opens with jammy black cherry, lots of blackberry, raspberry, a little cola, touches of vanilla and baking spice and even a bit of a brambly note. It's quite lovely and very aromatic and only gets more so with time in the glass.
Tasting unleashes an explosion of juicy, fruity deliciousness in your mouth, again with well integrated baking spice notes. There's tons of candied cherry and blackberry but the wine has almost no residual sugar (less than 2 grams per liter). This is not even close to a sweet wine but it does have many sweet flavors.
Really smooth and with bright acidity, this one drinks beautifully right from the get-go which is great because it will be likely be gone before it has much time to get air. If you have the patience and willpower to let it breathe; however, it will develop even more.
It ends dry with long lasting sweet fruit notes. While it's totally delicious right now, it's easily got another 10-15 years of aging ability so there's really no reason not to stock up at this price. So good once again, we love this wine! If anything the 2019 might even be a bit more savory than those previous vintages.
Unfortunately poor spring weather caused a smaller (but more flavorful) crop than usual in 2019 so this may be your only chance to get this wine. Take advantage of it while you can.
