Vilarnau Brut Reserva Cava - Pleasant All Around

By: Jon Thorsen Published: February 3, 2022 Last Updated: January 17, 2023

A crisp and tasty Cava, the Vilarnau Brut Reserva Cava.

Vilarnau Brut Reserva Cava - Pleasant All Around

Sparkling wine made from 50% Macabeo, 35% Parellada and 15% Chardonnay from Sant Sadurni d'Anoia in the Cava DO of Spain. The wine is aged over 15 months in the bottle where the secondary fermentation that creates the bubbles happens (just like Champagne). It has 10 g/L of residual sugar and is vegan friendly.

Sample submitted for review. The wine has an SRP of $18 and is available for as low as $12. It is imported by Gonzalez Byass.

    From the winery:

With this cava we are trying to achieve a balance between the three kinds of aroma that tend to be present in cavas. Firstly, the primary aromas that come from the fruit (the grapes) and provide the fruity and floral notes. Then there are the secondary aromas that come from the second fermentation inside the bottle and bring to mind the smells of bread and pastries baking. Lastly there are the tertiary aromas that develop as the cava ages and are reminiscent of toast, nuts and honey.

This is a very fresh cava but one that has body too, so that if served at 6-8C it is a good match for all kinds of seafood, fish, white meat and poultry - a perfect companion for every course of a meal.

    11.5% Alcohol

The non-vintage Vilarnau Brut Reserva Cava opens with an attractive aroma of apple, pear, citrus and a touch of a yeasty note.

Tasting reveals similar flavors to the nose which are lightly sweet in the mouth, plus lots of fine bubbles and crisp acidity. Pleasant all around, this is a solid Cava!

    It finishes dry and crisp.
