Quite nice for the Costco price, we review the 2018 Alonso Lopez Rioja Crianza Tempranillo.
90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano from vines more than 40 years old in Rioja, Spain. The wine is aged 14 months in new French oak barrels and at least 8 months in bottle before release.
The Alonso Lopez Rioja Crianza Tempranillo has an SRP of $35 but we found it at Costco for just $9.99. It is imported Misa Imports.
From the bottle:
Bright, clean and full red. Explosive aromas of crushed raspberry, rosemary, violet, smoke and coffee. With uncanny roundness, Alonso Lopez fills the mouth leaving an impression of velvet red berries and minerals. Finishes extremely long and magically fresh. Made with 90% Tempranillo – 10% Graciano from ancient vines. Malolactic fermentation took place in cement vats as well as new French barrels. Aged 14 months in new French oak barrels. Perfect pairing with Iberico bellota ham, roasted lamb, fillet mignon and all important dishes.

The 2018 Alonso Lopez Rioja Crianza Tempranillo opens with a pleasing aroma of black cherry, dried herbs like rosemary and sage, violets, a little baking spice and coffee. It’s a nice combination of flavors and it makes for quite an attractive and harmonious start.
Taking a sip reveals good depth and nice balance in this pleasing to drink wine. It features similar flavors to the nose plus some well-integrated spice in the mouth. Already aged nicely for you, this is very good for the price – I probably wouldn’t age it too much longer though.
It ends dry, quite long, a bit juicy and grippy and wasn’t quite as good on day 2, so drink up. This one punches way above its $10 Costco price.
