A satisfying Trader Joe's find, the Bodem Las Margas Garnacha from Carinena, Spain.
100% Garnacha from vineyards at an altitude of 400 to 800 meters in Carinena, Aragon, Spain. The wine is barrel aged for just 2 months and is vegan friendly.
The Bodem Las Margas Garnacha appears to be a Trader Joe's exclusive, at least in the US. It sells for $12.99. It is distributed by Axial Vinos (maker of many of the other Spanish wines at Trader Joe's like Oxte The Silence Red Blend, Javier San Pedro Tempranillo and LaGranja) and is imported by Evaki Inc.
An arid climate and stony soils provide what Garnacha grape needs: plenty of sun and just enough minerals. Las Margas wine reflects all of that. Warm and ripe fruit driven flavours, complexity built up in several layers, the right freshness and a soft texture, resulting in a vibrant and generous wine.
14.5% Alcohol
The 2018 Bodem Las Margas Garnacha opens with a pleasing mixed berry aroma with some nice, strong floral notes.
The wine needs quite awhile to open up but then this is one savory little number. Dark berry fruit with nice touches of spice are wrapped up in a smooth and satisfying mouthfeel. Like a lot of Garnacha from this area, I find that it has a subtle complexity to it that elevates the experience.
The fruit turns rather tart on the dry, decent length, savory, mouth watering finish featuring hints of herbal and mineral notes underneath.
