Casas del Toqui is back with a pair of high scoring wines that help to show the difference a vintage can make.

You may remember this winery from our recent Gran Toqui Syrah deal that many of you have mentioned you enjoyed. This time we turn to Cabernet.

Both vintages of Casas del Toqui Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon have big scores. The 2018 was awarded a "Top 100 Best Buy" designation from Wine & Spirits magazine (who also scored it at 91 points). James Suckling gave it 92 points and Wine Enthusiast came in at 90. The 2019 received 91 points from James Suckling.

The wines come from the Cachapoal Valley in the northern half of the Rapel Valley, between Maipo and Colchagua, which is a great spot for Cabernet Sauvignon (and Carmenere).

Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, both wines were aged in oak barrels for 8 months and have had quite a bit of additional time in the bottle at this point. And both wines are drinking wonderfully. They are also very low in sugar coming in at around 3 grams per liter.

The SRP on these is an already reasonable $20, but of course you won't pay anywhere near that through today's Insider Deal…

Very complex nose with hints of tobacco, spices and black fruits, and a soft hint of vanilla. Balanced with firm but silky tannins, good body and with a long and very persistent finish.

Serve between 16-18C with grilled meats and cheeses.

Up first let's take a look at the 2018 vintage.

The 2018 Casas del Toqui Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon opens with an inviting, harmonious aroma of plum, berry, touches of mint, chocolate and spice.

Tasting the medium-bodied wine reveals it to be smooth with similar fruit to the nose but a bit more fleshy and juicy in the mouth. It also features some light touches of spice. It's not overly complex but it is quite easy to drink.

It ends dry, long and a bit grippy with a touch of tobacco under the lasting fruit. This is a simple, but very pleasing Cab!

Next, we've got the 2019 vintage.

The 2019 Casas del Toqui Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon also opens with quite an inviting aroma but it leans more toward the fruit and herbal end of the spectrum. It’s a great example of how the same wine from the same place can be expressed from one vintage to the next.

In the mouth the wine tastes similar to the 2018 but again is a touch more herbal and also features some fine, grainy tannins that seem to have already resolved on the 2018 (and I expect will do the same here).

The finish is again similar (dry and long) and perhaps even a touch more grippy. This one is also highly recommended!
