A little over a year ago we offered the 2016 vintage of this wine, and it was received very well. With a normal price of $55, it's certainly not cheap but nevertheless pretty much par for the course for carefully made, estate, small production (just 22 barrels were produced) Pinot Noir aged for 19 months in French oak barrels.
Today you'll be happy to know that not only is the next vintage of the wine still excellent, but our deal price has decreased substantially, all the way down to $20 a bottle (a DISCOUNT of $35 a bottle or 64%).
This hand-harvested Pinot Noir comes from a mix of clones (52% heritage selections and 48% Dijon) all from the rocky and sandy soils of the Center of Effort estate vineyard along the south-facing slopes of the western Edna Valley. 20% whole cluster fermentation adds complexity to the final blend. The wine is aged in French oak (30% new, the rest a mix of second-fill and older barrels) for 19 months.
This wine is truly a labor of love as witnessed by the winemaking process itself:
We aim to craft a Pinot Noir that is true to the vineyard, with a stylistic emphasis on structure, elegance, and complexity. We farm rigorously, on a vine by vine basis, and harvest in sequential passes over an extended period of time. All fruit is picked during the cool nighttime and early AM hours, to ensure that it arrives intact and cold to the crush pad for sorting and processing.
We allow the native yeast strains resident on the fruit and in the vineyard to initiate fermentation naturally and to contribute their own unique signature to the fruit. A multitude of small-lot fermentations are managed entirely by hand – resulting in a varied palette of individual wines from which to select our final blend. Exclusive use of free drained wine, a long gradual elevage in new and second-use French oak barrels and careful blending precedes an unfiltered bottling at approximately 19 months of age.
We can heartily attest that all of this focus in the vineyard and spare-no-expense approach to winemaking pays off in the bottle. Josh Raynolds at Vinous agrees scoring it 92 points. Wine Enthusiast comes in at 91 points. We gave it 91-93 but would definitely put it at the high end of that range. If you'd like to give it a try yourself, now's the time with our giant discount.
The Center of Effort Edna Valley Estate Pinot Noir has an of SRP $55 and is typically only available from the winery at that price. Just 1,094 6-pack cases were produced. (Note that this is not the same wine as the confusingly named Center of Effort "Effort" Pinot Noir which is much higher production and retails for much less.)

From the winery:
The signature bottling of Pinot Noir from our Estate Vineyard is always crafted to be mid-weight, aromatic, and complex, with the structure to reward proper cellaring. 2017 was a growing season with some difficult moments. Poor conditions at flowering set us up for a tiny crop right from the start, and despite moderate weather through the summer, a labor day heat spike stalled the vines and further diminished the crop, which came in at just 1.3 tons per acre. Low yields contributed to very low pH, high acidity, and quality tannins. We expect this vintage to be quite long-lived.
Deep, dense red. Aromas of ripe red plum, espresso, loamy earth, and dried cherry. Flavors echo ripe plum, with new leather orange zest and rose hips. Lush, smooth palate feel, and is quite concentrated.
Grown, Produced & Bottled by Center of Effort Winery
14.1% Alcohol
The 2017 Center of Effort Edna Valley Estate Pinot Noir opens with a beautiful aroma of plum and black cherry plus bay leaf and other herbal notes plus touches of cranberry, flowers, licorice, tomato plant, rhubarb and much more. With wonderful complexity, there are lots of different nuances to discover as you sip and swirl.
All those same notes from the nose are also front and center in the mouth along with a nice earthy streak. The fruit is also a bit more tart, including lots of blood orange. The whole thing is wrapped up in a smooth, satisfying mouthfeel. This is absolutely lovely.
It ends dry and very long with lots of lingering tart fruit. Excellent!
