Today's French Varietal Discovery packs includes the Dog & Pony Grenache, Dog & Pony Trousseau, Dog & Pony Negrette and Dog & Pony Carignane.
We love introducing people to delicious, lesser-known varietals. If you love discovering them, then have we got a treat for you!
Comanche Cellars has quickly become a favorite among our Insider Deals so today we are bringing back a couple favorites and also adding in two relatively obscure, yet delicious, red varieties.
Here's what's in today's French Varietal Discovery Pack:
We start with the most familiar variety, Grenache, and we've got a fantastic example from the Ness Vineyard in San Benito County. Aged 24 months in French oak, just 49 cases were produced. We score it at 92-93 points. We previously offered the 2019 vintage of this wine and it was very well received.
Up next is a variety you've most likely had, but perhaps never as a single varietal wine - Carignane (or Carignan). Originally from Spain (where it is also known as Carinena and Mazuelo) the grape contributes to many of the famous wines from Rioja and the Priorat. It is also grown extensively throughout Southern France, which is why we're including it here, where it figures heavily into the wines of the Languedoc.
Known for being an incredibly flexible food wine, we've got a stellar example of old vine Carignane from the Graziano Vineyard in Redwood Valley. (The Graziano family is one of the oldest grape growing families in Mendocino County and their vineyard includes original plantings by Vincenzo Graziano that are at least 70 years old.) This example features stunning depth and harmony. Aged 31 months in French oak with just 150 cases produced, we gave it a Perfect 10 Taste Rating (94 points).
Next are two varieties you may have never even heard of!
Let's start with the Trousseau. Today's savory, complex and powerful example comes from the Gimelli Vineyard in San Benito County and was aged 23 months in French oak. Only 54 cases were produced.
This very dark-skinned grape is indigenous to the Jura region in Eastern France but has also migrated to Portugal where it is called Bastardo (and is one of the 5 recommended Port grape varieties) and Spain where it is known as Merenzao, Verdejo Negro and also Maturana Tinta in Rioja, where it was a significant part of the wines until phylloxera almost completely knocked it out.
We absolutely loved this wine, giving it a Perfect 10 Taste Rating (94 points).
And finally, we have the delicious and fascinating Negrette, aged 23 months in French oak. Only 49 cases were produced.
Negrette is another very dark-skinned (black) grape variety that is found almost exclusively in southwest France (Fronton). It can also be found in the Calleri Vineyard in San Benito County, which is where our example comes from. Once again, we loved this wine, scoring it at 91-92 points.
The Grenache normally retails for $34 and all the others for just $32. Those are pretty reasonable prices for very small production single vineyard examples of such rare varieties. But of course, we aim not only to introduce you to these delicious examples, but also to do it at the lowest cost possible.
For the next day you can get the Comanche Dog & Pony French Varietal Discovery 4-Pack (1 bottle of each wine) for just $XX.95 ($XX.XX/bottle). That's a discount of 42%!
Our extremely affordable 2-day summer shipping is a flat $9.99 per order. (You'll never pay more than $9.99 shipping, no matter how many 4-packs you buy in one order.) We ship in heat protection and minimize the transit time to help keep your wine safe in the warmer weather. Orders will still ship 5-10 days after the conclusion of the offer. Up first we've got the 2020 Comanche Dog & Pony Ness Vineyard Grenache. The wine spends 24 months in 25% new French oak and just 49 cases were produced.
From the winery:
With a tantalizing spiced nose, this Grenache offers a mouthful of cranberry, Meyer lemon peel and baking spice flavors. It was aged in neutral oak creating a lovely expression of the fruit with a light and long, juicy finish.

The 2020 Comanche Dog & Pony Grenache opens with an intoxicating aroma of spicy black cherry and cranberry plus lots of varied baking spice, vanilla, a little licorice and even more.
It only takes one sip to know that this a great example of Grenache but be forewarned, this wine is still quite young and needs a lot of air to be at its best. With a smooth, round mouthfeel this medium-bodied wine is both balanced and flavorful. It features rich, juicy fruit similar to the nose with nice spice notes throughout. Both easy drinking and full of complexity, I love it!
It ends dry, very long, juicy and spicy and was even better on day 2. Did I mention this is a great example of the variety? Yum!

This Old World Spanish varietal is a special treat. With its garnet color in the glass, this unique wine starts with a wave of spice, thyme and cranberry on the nose. The 2019 Comanche Dog & Pony Carignane begins with a very attractive and harmonious aroma full of deep, dark fruit and spice. It's instantly intriguing.
This one does need a few hours to open up but then it reveals wonderful depth on the juicy, dark fruit along with well-integrated spice and lots of dried herbs. I love the deep flavors and the dense texture. It's wonderful to experience this as a single varietal.
It ends dry, extremely long, chewy and grippy on the mouth-watering finish featuring tons of lasting juicy fruit. This uber-delicious! And it was just as good on day 2.

From the winery:
Lucky for us, this rare Old World varietal from southwest France can, amazingly, be found in a few tiny vineyards in neighboring San Benito County. With a lovely perfumed nose showcasing vibrant spicy florals, this medium-bodied beauty has soft acidity and notes of orange blossom and raspberry with a hint of brown sugar.

The 2020 Comanche Cellars Dog & Pony Negrette opens with a strong and attractive aroma full of dark, ripe fruit, lots of violet and other floral notes and nice touches of spice, vanilla and leather. It's a lovely start.
Tasting the wine reveals similar flavors to the nose with more dark, ripe, juicy fruit that has great depth in the mouth. Well balanced with well-integrated spice, this is delicious and it gets even better after some air.
It ends dry, very long, and grippy with lots of lasting juicy fruit. Both delicious and fascinating to taste, it's a shame we don't see this variety more often. It was just as good on day 2.
