Hi Jon, Will you ever offer the Desert Wind Sandstorm Series again? The 2016 Merlot was the best I’ve ever tasted. This was definitely one of those times I wish I’d ordered several cases!
All three Sandstorm Series wines use the best fruit from the Desert Wind Vineyard in the Wahluke Slope of Washington State. The winery and vineyard were purchased by one of our Washington favorites, Gard Vintners, a couple years ago from Fries Family Wines. (Please note that these wines are not to be confused with the base level Desert Wind wines that do not have the “Sandstorm Series” designation and are much less expensive.)
Aged 20 months in French oak with 40% new barrels, only 125 cases of each wine were produced. The 2017’s don’t have any outside reviews yet but the 2016s had multiple 94-96 point ratings. You can read our full reviews below, but we found each of the three 2017s to be at least as good as the 2016s, giving all of them Perfect 10 Taste Ratings (94+ points).

The first wine in today’s 3-Pack is the 2017 Desert Wind Sandstorm Series Cabernet Sauvignon which is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Petit Verdot, 1% Syrah and 1% Merlot all from the Desert Wind Vineyard. It’s really almost more of a Bordeaux style blend with only 75% Cabernet but whatever you want to call it, it’s fabulous. And we absolutely love that the winery upped the percentage of Petit Verdot in this vintage. You will receive 1 bottle.

The 2017 Desert Wind Sandstorm Series Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a very pleasing and harmonious aroma of ripe dark berry fruit, lovely vanilla and sweet spice, and touches of tobacco and graphite. It’s a wonderful start.
The wine tastes absolutely lovely, offering great structure, excellent balance and lots of very well integrated spice throughout. With a smooth, silky mouthfeel and similar flavors to the nose, this is super delicious. This newly released wine does benefit from a little time to breathe – it opens up magnificently after a couple hours – so plan appropriately if you are drinking it soon.
It ends dry, extremely long, and juicy with lingering touches of spice, vanilla, tobacco and more. It was just as good on day two.

And now on to our review:
The 2017 Desert Wind Sandstorm Series Merlot opens with a very attractive and enticing aroma of succulent blackberry, cedar, baking spice and licorice.
It only takes one sip to know this is a truly great example of Washington State Merlot. Smooth, extremely tasty, and a bit chewy the wine offers more dark fruit, which is juicy in the mouth, along with touches of cocoa, black tea and a little tobacco. This one also has great structure and balance and a smooth, silky mouthfeel.
It ends dry, very long and a bit grippy and chewy on the savory, delicious finish. It was even a bit better on day two.

The 2017 Desert Wind Sandstorm Series Zephyr opens with a very pleasing and harmonious aroma of dark fruit, dusty spice, vanilla and a little licorice. It’s a savory, fabulous start.
Taking a sip reveals a smooth, juicy, really delicious red blend with great depth and balance and well-integrated spice. A bit chewy at first, this young wine does need some time to open up, but your patience will be greatly rewarded.
It ends dry, long and a bit grippy and chewy with spice and licorice under the long-lasting dark fruit. It was even a bit more savory on day 2. We like the 2017 even better than the we did the 2016, as this vintage just seems to be even more harmonious with everything working together wonderfully.
