We're on a Beaujolais kick here at Reverse Wine Snob and today sees the return of a beauty from what is perhaps the most distinguished of the 10 Beaujolais cru, producing wines that are really pretty much the opposite of what most people think of when they hear Beaujolais.
Like many wine regions in France, Beaujolais has a hierarchy of regions. At the bottom, you have the standard Beaujolais designation. Just above that comes Beaujolais Villages made up of 38 villages in the hilly terrain in the northern part of the region. At the top of the ladder come the 10 crus of Beaujolais which are Brouilly, Chenas, Chiroubles, Cote de Brouilly, Fleurie, Julienas, Morgon, Moulin-a-Vent, Regnie and Saint-Amour. Each of these are allowed to carry their appellation name on the bottle.
As you move up the hierarchy, the quality of the vineyards go up and the maximum allowable grapes per acre go down, resulting in higher quality, more complex and more age-worthy wines.
Most feel that of the ten cru, Moulin a Vent is at the top rung thanks to its special terroir of pink granite soils full of magnesium and manganese which both impart unique characteristics and create difficult growing conditions for the vines. The result of this is lower yields, but the grapes that are produced are extremely flavorful and concentrated.
As we've noted before, it seems somewhat paradoxical but the harder it is for the vine to grow (and thus the lower the yield), the the more flavorful the grapes tend to be. Today's wine is a great example.
The Domaine Fond Moiroux Moulin a Vent comes from the estate's 45-year-old vines in the Romaneche-Thorins commune in Moulin a Vent. It is made from 100% Gamay Noir and aged for 10 months in 2-year-old oak barrels.
The 2014 we are offering here today received 93 points from Wine Enthusiast magazine and 91 points from both Wine Spectator and Gilbert & Gaillard and thanks to the robust response we received the first time we offered it earlier this year, we've been able to bring it back.
The wine has quite a reasonable SRP by Moulin a Vent standards at $26.
For the next 2 days; however, you can get 4 bottles of the 2014 Domaine Fond Moiroux Moulin a Vent for just $59.99 ($15 a bottle).
That's a discount of $11 a bottle and 44% after factoring in our temporary summer 2-day shipping which is a flat $9.99 per order no matter how many 4-packs you buy. Read on for our full review.

From the winery:
The Fond Moiroux (pronounced “mwah-roo”) wine estate in Beaujolais was founded in the auspicious year of 1789 (Vive la France!). It is located in Cogny, a small village in the southern part of the region. The Domaine owns six hectares (14.8 acres) of Gamay Noir and Chardonnay in the limestone soils surrounding the estate house, as well as two hectares (5 acres) of Gamay in the highly regarded Beaujolais Cru appellation of Moulin-à-Vent. Owners Bernd and Marie Bachhausen farm their vineyards sustainably, employing cover crops and rigorous hand work to bring a naturally healthy balance to the vines. The winemaking at Fond Moiroux returns to traditional Burgundy practices. There is no carbonic maceration, as was fashionable in Beaujolais in the latter part of the 20th century. The fruit is fully destemmed, fermentation is done in stainless steel vats, and the wines are matured for a year in used oak barriques.
THE MOULIN-À-VENT AOC
This is universally considered to be the most prestigious of the ten Beaujolais crus. The Moulin-à-Vent cru covers an area of 670 hectares (1,655 acres) in the hilly northern part of Beaujolias region, where sandy granite soils, with a high content of magnesium, give the wines their characteristic structure, floral complexity and ageing potential. The four parcels owned by Fond Moiroux have an average vine age of 45 years and lie between 100 and 400 meters down the slope from the famous windmill that gives the appellation its name.THE 2014 VINTAGE
From Josh Raynolds (Vinous.com): “The 2014s exhibit lively berry and floral character punctuated by zesty minerality. The wines are concentrated yet not heavy, and show good structure without coming off as outsized. 2014 might turn out to have produced the most consistently outstanding group of Beaujolais since the legendary 2005s”13% Alcohol
The 2014 Domaine Fond Moiroux Moulin a Vent opens with aromas of red cherry and berry plus hints of oaky spice, vanilla, licorice, black tea and some herbal notes. It's a very balanced and attractive bouquet.
Taking a sip reveals a smooth and tasty full-bodied wine with similar flavors to the nose but great depth on the fruit. It also has good complexity and great structure and it keeps getting even better as it has more air.
A touch of earthiness underneath leads into the dry, very long and lasting finish. It was just as good on day 2. This one has aged quite beautifully and is really delightful to drink right now. I'd guess it still has at least another year or two of peak drinking as well.
