A Bulk Buy Bordeaux blend that might just be too easy to drink, the Donati Family Vineyards Claret.
It's our first Insider Deal on a Claret! (Although not really since it's just a fancy British name for Cabernet based Bordeaux blend but hey we'll go with it because this wine is delicious.)
The grapes for today's wine are grown in a little known appellation in California now getting a pretty nice reputation, the Paicines AVA, which is on the other side of the Galban mountain range from Monterey. It is the southernmost (and warmest) AVA in San Benito County. (This is a great strategy for reverse wine snobs, by the way -- looking for delicious wines from lesser known regions.)
The blend is 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 7% Malbec, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. The wine spends 23 months in oak, 13% of which was new French oak, 7% new American oak and 2% new Russian oak with the remainder in previously used barrels. The wine is completely dry with only 0.4 g/L of residual sugar.
The Donati Claret has a pretty reasonable SRP of $20. 7,758 cases of this wine were produced and James Suckling gave the 2016 we are offering here 91 points.

The 2016 Donati Family Vineyards Claret opens with very pleasing aromas of black cherry, blackberry, just a bit of a bell pepper note plus a little cedar, baking spice and licorice.
The wine tastes smooth, fruity, juicy and quite good. It features soft tannins and similar fruit flavors to the nose with nicely integrated spice notes to round things out. Nicely balanced, this is quite a delicious blend that is super easy to drink. It's definitely a crowd-pleasing wine but still has a bit of complexity as well.
It ends with a dry, long and slightly chewy finish. Whatever you want to call it, this is one tasty red blend! And with a Taste rating of 9, we liked this one even better than another popular Claret from Coppola.
