Foggy Veil Hillside Selection Santa Barbara County Red – Clearly Tasty

By: Jon Thorsen Last Updated: October 15, 2020

A nice Syrah and Grenache blend from Trader Joe’s, the Foggy Veil Hillside Selection Santa Barbara County Red Blend.

Foggy Veil Hillside Selection Santa Barbara County Red Blend – Clearly Tasty

78% Syrah and 22% Grenache from Santa Barbara County, California. The wine was aged in oak for an unspecified amount of time.

The Foggy Veil Hillside Selection Santa Barbara County Red is available exclusively at Trader Joe’s in the US and sells for $13.99.

From the bottle:

A bold red wine made with hand harvested grapes from select hillside vineyard blocks. Fermented in small lots, oak aged, carefully blended and bottled in Santa Maria, CA.

Foggy Veil is our tribute to the foggy coastal vineyards of Santa Barbara County.

Its close proximity to the Pacific Ocean creates a cool growing environment perfect for Rhone-style varietals. The region features a long growing season and very little rainfall, giving the grapes extensive time to build flavor on the vine.

14% Alcohol

The 2017 Foggy Veil Hillside Selection Santa Barbara County Red Blend begins with aromas of black cherry, cola, a bit of spice and a little bit of an earthy, bell pepper note. It definitely needs some air to open up to be at its best, it’s even a bit funky when first popped and poured, but it definitely fills out nicely after a couple hours.

The smooth, medium bodied wine tastes of plum and lots of juicy, ripe dark berry fruit. Honestly I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it at first sip – it’s a bit disjointed until the mid-palate where everything just comes together nicely. Hints of licorice, cola, spice, chocolate, vanilla and a little earthiness lead into the dry, long finish. It evens out a bit more as it has more air too so be sure to give this one a good decant before consuming.
