A deep and juicy burger wine, we review the Gran Sombrero Cabernet Franc available at Costco.
100% Cabernet Franc from from the high elevations of Gualtallari, Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina. The wine spends 9 months in used French oak barrels, followed by 6 months of bottle aging before release.
Today’s selection is a top of the line wine from Huentala Wines in the Uco Valley. As you might suspect, the “Gran Sombrero” line is one step above the “Sombrero” wines.
We’re big fans of Cabernet Franc from Argentina so we were delighted to spot this one at Costco for just $14.99. It is imported by Vinamericas Inc. It does not appear to be available, at least not widely, outside of Costco.
From the winery:
2024 Gran Sombrero Cabernet Franc
Deep ruby red in color, with dark, rich highlights. On the nose, it offers an elegant, spicy character, with subtle notes of green bell pepper, black fruit, eucalyptus, fresh herbs, and flowers, combined with aromas of tobacco, licorice, and vanilla, imparted by aging in oak barrels. On the palate, it is delicate, with refreshing acidity, silky and persistent tannins, and a long finish.

The 2024 Gran Sombrero Cabernet Franc opens with a pleasing aroma of dark fruit, spice and a little cigar box. It’s a harmonious start.
The wine tastes smooth with similar flavors to the nose and none of the underripe green notes that can plague this variety. It also has plenty of depth and juicy fruit. This makes for a great burger wine!
It ends dry and long and was just as good on day 2. We put this at the high end of our 8 Taste Rating at 90 points.
