A nice burger wine from Duckhorn Vineyards, we review the Greenwing Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 4% Malbec and 2% Syrah from Columbia Valley, Washington State. The wine was aged 16 months in stainless steel and French oak (30% new, 70% neutral).

VINTAGE NOTES: The 2023 growing season was in a word, ideal. While budbreak was delayed due to a cold, wet spring, the arrival of warm and consistent weather throughout summer provided perfect conditions for the vines and the maturing grapes. Even though we had a couple of small bouts of rain during harvest, and a brief cold spell that created two waves of picking between the earlier- and later-ripening varieties, neither the rain or cold had any negative impact on the exceptional quality of the fruit. As a result, our Columbia Valley grapes yielded wines with deep, alluring color, rich textures, and complex fruit profiles, while retaining the natural acidity to produce bright and impeccably structured wines.

WINEMAKING NOTES: Brisk and bright, this wine is a vivid expression of Washington’s untamed beauty. Aromas of wild strawberry, Rainier cherry and ripe plum rise from the glass, layered with hints of baking spice and rustic earth. On the palate, a dynamic rush of pomegranate and raspberry unfolds, balanced by the depth of candied fig and juicy plum. A perfect palate weight carries the wine to a lovely, enduring finish.

The 2023 Greenwing Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a pleasing aroma of blackberry, black cherry, a bit of baking spice and some cola, licorice, leather and black tea. It’s a nice start although it does need a little time to open up.

Tasting the wine reveals similar flavors to the nose that are a bit more tart in the mouth. A bit tannic and with a smooth mouthfeel, this is quite easy to drink and makes for a very good burger wine.

It ends dry, quite grippy and long on the finish and was maybe even a bit better on day 2 where it had more balance.
