Hess Select Cabernet Sauvignon – Noteworthy

By: Jon Thorsen Last Updated: December 27, 2018

Food-friendly, flexible and fun to drink, the Hess Select North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon.

Hess Select Cabernet Sauvignon - Noteworthy

79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Petite Sirah, 4% Malbec, 2% Merlot, 2% Syrah and 2% Zinfandel from the North Coast (Lake County, Napa County and Mendocino County) of California. The wine was aged in 35% new French and American oak for 18 months.

Sample submitted for review. The Hess Select Cabernet Sauvignon has an SRP of $19 but can be found for as low as $12 at Costco. Ready to buy? Check your local retailers. 142,000 cases produced.

From the bottle:

The lion is the emblem of the Hess Family and symbolizes the bold and persevering character of our founder Donald Hess. In his honor, we strive to make the very best wines that elevate your everyday. This Cabernet is bursting with spice and black fruit wrapped around mouth filling tannins and well balanced oak.

13.8% Alcohol

The 2015 Hess Select Cabernet Sauvignon starts with aromas of plum, ripe fruit, black cherry, spice, and a little smoke. The wine has a lush, round mouthfeel and tastes of plum and vanilla with a lot of oak and soft tannins. All those other varietals add some nice complexity to this medium-bodied wine. It finishes with lingering spice and notes of chocolate. This is a great value and a great wine to have on hand to pair with red meat, BBQ, and even with a pizza. We found the wine to be a little smoother on day 2 but it may have lost a little spice as well.
